I'm disabled and walk on a cane. I have had every kind over the years. finally landed on bamboo/rattan. I have broken every other kind of wood cane just slipping and falling or getting caught in closing doors. the bamboo one has lasted me for many years now. it's even a little flexible and virtually unbreakable. do you think your guy could make those? great techniques and instruction. these are moves that anyone could learn. simple and elegant.

I asked and he can’t source the materials right now with supply chain issues. If you want a light and nearly indestructible cane, he can make my dojo training cane in hickory 7/8” in diameter. It’s inexpensive, powerful, attractive, and durable! canemasters.com/affiliate-pages/quantum-martial-arts/quantum-dojo-training-cane

I recently had to use a walking stick to defend myself after being stabbed in the neck from behind in my own home. The attack continued after I used the stick, and the individual eye gouged, bit, and grabbed my groin and squeezed also. The walking stick caused an injury to the individual though, who was picked up by the police soon afterwards with both mine and his own blood on him. I was lucky to have survived. The walking stick was not a cane masters, or any other form of combat cane though. I imagine that the teardrop edge and sharpened hook would make quite a difference, to be sure.

Wow. Thanks for sharing Joe. I’m glad you survived and hope you have fully recovered.

@@pasquinilli Thankyou Matt. I have been watching your cane self defence vids for a while, and learnt a lot from you. If it is useful information for you, I found that, facing a trained fighter ( the individual who attacked me had martial arts training), that feinting with the walking stick opened up the opportunity to strike in another area, and was crucial to the individual not being able to block and grab the walking stick so easily. It was feinting first that enabled me to land the shot. I am still in recovery at the moment, as the attack only happened 4 days ago. I just got out of hospital. I just wanted to thank you for your videos and teachings on KZbin, as otherwise I would have never known how to use a walking stick so effectively in self defence, and the individual would have had time to find an improvised weapon. ( I disarmed the knife after the initial stabbings to the neck from behind. I have a little training in martial arts myself, and had to use every bit of it to survive.) Once again, thankyou for your teachings. I wanted to personally let you know just how much I not only enjoy the cane training, but that your teachings helped to save me in an extremel life and death scenario. So once again, thank you Matt Keep up the brilliant work. You are a legend.

@@pasquinilli I will be purchasing a cane masters cane asap also. Am looking into the various designs now. I was wondering whether you have ever thought of bringing out your own line of combat canes at all? Just a thought. Peace.

Thank you again! I lost the audio at the end of this. I don't know what happened. I'm not sure what he meant by helicopter strike, but I wondered whether that same basic move would work with a horizontal strike. When one is doing the blocking-type move at about the 11:27 mark, maybe one could make that next strike a horizontal strike at shoulder level instead of a pure vertical strike. If the ceiling seemed a little low, I could see where bringing that strike from more of a horizontal position might feel safer because I wouldn't be worried about getting my strike caught on the ceiling. I'd still keep my elbow tucked close to my body to keep pressure off my shoulder and to keep the cane more between myself and the attacker. If the attacker rushed me in that moment, having my upper arm close to my body would allow me to make more of a hammer fist strike with the knuckle of the cane. If the attacker wasn't quite that close yet, I'd strike with the middle of the cane as the attacker closed the distance. That would still keep the cane between me and the attacker. Obviously, this move isn't good if I'm standing with a wall to my right, but it might be better in a place with a low ceiling.

Nice work, as always Matt. You have great teaching skills. The repetition is fantastic. I have a couple questions. On the quick flip up groin strike, it seems that depending on stance or motion of attacker, it might be a difficult shot to land. (Like maybe their feet would have to be apart, leaving a bit of a gap). Any thoughts on that? (Not exactly easy to replicate a target for practice). In general terms, can you offer advice on how to practice to build speed and power? What I'm getting at is it seems in any sport where you are swinging a bat, racquet, fist, etc, if you try to "muscle it" too much you bind up and are slower, yet if you totally relax you get no power. How do you practice "relaxed" yet having power at point of impact? Or does the power come via the physics of speed and mass of the weapon? (I had this discussion decades ago with an office mate who was a black belt in regard to blocks and punches and it seemed his answer was to "firm up" right before the strike lands. Thanks.

Matt, when I watch KZbin videos that claim to have techniques to defeat the cane, they ALWAYS show moves that can defeat a "Chicken Wing" strike. They never show a defense against the strike that you teach (striking from the shoulder not from the side).
@pasquinilli2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Doug! Always fight behind your sticks and if you don’t have a weapon, fight behind your guard. It’s the principles that can protect us, not necessarily the techniques.

Hey Matt. I was just wondering what the most effective wood to get a cane masters cane made in, according to your opinion: oak, or hickory?
@pasquinilli2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe. Ask Keith to make it for you in Hickory. It is far stronger and you can even go to a 7/8” diameter and still be very strong and heavy but easier on aging hands. Tell Keith I mentioned 7/8” hickory and he can tell you more why that is a good option too.

Hitting someone with a cane is a potential 'assault with a deadly weapon' charge. Problem is, if you have a real mobility disability that would justify a cane, you don't really have the balance or footwork to use one effectively. You may want to give some thought to how you will justify being in possession of the 'weapon', if you want to take a minimum of legal damage.
