It’s interesting, Sensei, that you wielded your SDWS with a left hand over right hand manner. There is/was a FMA master named Darrin Cook, who had a website named Big Stick Combat/Modified Tapado. I know he has books on Amazon. He’s a person worth looking into. He loads his SDWS on his left shoulder (left foot forward) with baseball bat grip and strikes vertically down (among other strikes), but what was interesting, and I’ve done this with my students, is that the stick comes down naturally on an attackers right hand/arm ( most people are right handed). This method does allow for attacking the weapon hand while keeping out of range. This method also neutralizes the attackers left hand for blocking/grabbing. Just a thought Sensei! Thank you again for an excellent class on SDWS techniques.

Hi Matt. Thanks for the great spin techniques. I have never practiced those with a walking stick. I particularly like them because of helping me to increase my ability with the walking stick or shillelagh. It was a great class. Also helping us to train in the "real world" of street survival self defense with or without the appropriate "tools". Stay safe. Doug.

Two other excellent persons for your consideration is Michael Janich’s dvd on the cane, Greg Gemeiner’s dvd on the cane/lacanne. Both are just excellent! I hope, soon, you will make a dvd on your instruction. I’ll be the first to buy it!😀

thanks, I walk through a posted coyote area here in Michigan and when asked why I have my Cane Master cane I say it's my "Coyote Stick". I use the middle carry mostly , but some times put the rubber tip down and use it like a mobility device. I also have a Purple Heart Armory octagonal Jo that I like.

Very nice! We trained with 2 bolo's back in the 1990's please show how how the weapon relates to hand. Nice Kendo adaptation. Luv the twirl and changing hands from the irish cane you are showing.

Hi Matt. I find carrying Cali sticks in my car very convenient because of the size. Can you do a video using to Cali sticks in Irish stick fighting?

I would like to see some zone footwork. Most people have a problem learning the 10 strikes with zoning.

This video works as a refresher for someone who’s into martial arts. For the average person, all that fancy spinning and twirling takes practice and time. I’m leaning more towards simply going apeshit on a predator with either the stick that I may have with me or using an weapon of opportunity that happens to be in arms length. One well placed crack on the coconut should stop the average attacker. In a real live situation most of this will have gone out the window and unless you’ve practiced religiously with your stick, it’ll be up to your adrenaline to help you.

If i put the end of the stick in the palm of my hand, especially if I put my weight on the stick, I would injure my hand. I avoid this risk by carrying the stick in the middle or using a cane, which spreads my weight on my hand and doesn't injure it.

I enjoy those people who think they're going to dodge a knife with their fancy footwork. I've never met anyone who could dodge a punch to the belly, and the knife will get there several inches sooner.

How? Hard and repeatedly. Technique a girlfriend used on a guy in college. He hugged the deputy who responded. Good times.
