Much cheaper plus it turned the place into a tourist attraction. You are right, normal countries would have spent much more and lost an opportunity. So sad for people living in those normal countries, too stupid to do what's best as they fall under the peer pressure of normal people like you.

I see lots of “why”s and “why not”s on here - simple solution is for people to use their brains, plan ahead, be aware of this environment and the timing of the tides - in other words, be prepared. Then there’d be few, if any, problems. But, alas, it’s vain hope that everybody will learn to THINK for themselves in a prudent and intelligent manner. So maybe CLOSE the road (i.e. barriers) at those times each day ?

I read it took 4 years to pave the 4km way, because of the rising tide everyday slowing them. There was a ferry service until a bridge was built further south in the 70’s.

Why make it higher, it's useless.
@thafff4 жыл бұрын
Because it's an historical site (first reference dates from 1701, but the pavement dates from the late 1930's) and a touristic attraction. A bridge has been built in the early 1970's between the southern tip of the island and the continent (D38 road).
@19Edurne3 жыл бұрын
There's already a bridge to get to the island. Not even mentionning the cost, those are very shallow waters and it would change the path of the tide currents., altering the ecosystem. It's in the middle of one of the main mussels and oysters production areas in France, even Europe. I bet shells producers would protest. Something of that sort happened at the Mont Saint Michel.
