Passat W8 straight pipe exhaust

2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 little pull up hill slipping on the road in 1-2-3 gears.
Exhaust is pretty much Straight piped. Stock resonator was removed and replaced with straight pipes and the rear mufflers were removed.

Was thinking the same thing. Its the only v8 engine that doesn't have the raspy "mullets & mayhem" sound, unless you buy into the ferrari family...... The W8 makes a very lovely noise in my opinion. At the upper range its more of a flat plane 8cyl sound and lower range is of course the VR6/R32 scream.

Just remember kids, for anyone who wants this car and never had a VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) vehicle to do your research on these or you will be disappointed! The W8 is not a common engine so if you purchase one that has been neglected or abused in any way, you will be buying into a money pit that often times has to go to a VW dealer or a "specialist" that will be charging a premium labor price. Dont even get me started on how nearly everything has to be removed (entire front clip, or dropping the engine) to do more than plugs and oil... I ♡ service position. Nothing in the way of performance or aftermarket products (100% custom for "tuning"), and pretty heavy with a moderate shortcoming on the amount of ponies the motor has to offer. (260hp area if I remember right?) The power and performance was restricted so VW wouldnt be stepping on its toes with the Audi V8s and "S" cars. If you have more than one product of similar type you need to maintain the selling points for version/level correct? There you go. Stick to VR6s or 1.8/2.0Ts if you want tuning and fun. Any other Vw/Audi motor requires a more financially sadistic petrolhead😅.

Brent Fabian Actually, the V10 TDI has poor reliability. You can find some reviews about this engine. It's definitely not recommended to buy a used car with this engine.

I'm curious to know how has, from your experience with the car, the reliability been? I'm considering getting a passat w8. My buddies in the past have owned VR6 jetta's and v6/i4 passat's some were great and others were a nightmare.

I've had the car for a little over 4 years now, and it has been really reliable. I've only had to change tires and do fluid changes (engine oil, gear oil, transmission flush for preventative maintenance). Oil changes are a little expensive at 9.5 quarts and I use lubromoly, so changes are around $120 /5k mi. Never had a CEL even with it straight piped and chipped. The main things I hear about happening are the cam adjusters which you can do an electroshock to, the balance shaft belt (easy fix), and the torque converters fail on most automatic cars. I would just stay away from the automatic ones. Everything but the engine and body are either c5 a6 or b5 s4 so most of those parts aren't too bad. They aren't too fast, but it's hard to beat the sound. With the chip, 290 crank hp is good enough for me as a daily driver.

Yeah it's pretty damn loud inside, but it never irritated me unless I was on the freeway at a constant rpm. I rarely drive on the freeway though so it was fine for me.

I do have some, but I won't have any of my camera stuff for a couple of months. I just got stationed somewhere new, and I couldn't bring the passat. You could try just having the resonator deleted first. It cost me about $80 to have that cut out and replaced with straight pipes and then have the stock mufflers welded back on. That was a little louder than stock and sounded better also.

I know its an old video, i just picked up a 04 sedan 6mt w8 and i had it straight piped from cats back, it sounds nothing like this. Mine sounds like a bored out vr6 lol its not even that loud. I read you have 2.25 diameter piping. I just went with oem size(whatever it is). Do you have a. X-pipe or is it truly 2 straight pipes from cats back? I have 2 true straight pipe cbe but i want this sound.

It still has the stock x-pipe. I will also let you know to make sure they brace the exhaust correctly or you’ll go through flex pipes like crazy

I had the big resonator taken out, you can google or KZbin search "resonator delete" for the w8 for a better description and then had pipes welded from there back without mufflers

They never made a gti with a w8 so it will probably never sound like this. The gti vr6 can sound pretty similar, though, so i guess it depends which you have. The 2.0, 1.8 or vr6 gti can all sound good though

In this video, the resonator was taken out and replaced with 2.25” pipe and then my buddy and I sawed the mufflers off for shits n giggles. Shortly after, I had some vibrant mufflers added, and then I took those back off and had quad tips put on the muffler delete, which is how it has stayed until now.
