Though the running time is a bit short, the momentum and storytelling work to negate this issue, and the film is defined by many fun moments: Rane's introduction. Cutter's backstory. The brief time of tranquillity on the plane. The opening assault. "Always bet on black". Cutter's problems with the local authorities. The fair ground hunt. The strategies against Rane. Cutter getting back on the plane. The final fight between Rane and Cutter.. the look on Rane's face just as he gets kicked from the plane is more of this same encapsulation! Passenger 57 is the ultimate action thriller!

Ahhh the awesome one liners. I miss movies like this. But Charles Rane... for me will also forever be linked as Juergen (La Femme Nikita series) and Jacob Kell (Highlander: Endgame). Another memorable part of this movie... the name "Sly DelVecchio" lol.. .I never forgot it. AND... that awesome cut when credits rolled that featured Stevie Wonder!

Rane and Cutter's story in Louisiana is something of an encapsulation of America's political identity, and yet none of that aspect deters from the thriller's ability to be an effective example of its genre. To the contrary, Passenger 57 is a very impressive film for its precise ability to leave different impressions while always being great.

In terms of the supporting cast, Passenger 57 doesn't suffer; Elizabeth Hurley is convincingly sadistic, and Alex Datcher is perfect as well. All round, I perceive Passenger 57 as a smarter, and more culturally relevant version of Con Air (I won't dismiss Con Air, but at the same time there's no denying that Passenger 57 is more of what Con Air is merely trying to be)..

The problem with Con Air is pacing. Once the siege is over there's no sense of urgency until the finale. Plus most of the hostages are convicts making them harder to sympathise for.

Both Charles Rane and John Cutter are that distinction of being cool and memorable despite being products of capitalist economics and nationalist psychology. Passenger 57 is a very charismatic film, to the point of surpassing the mark of just being an example of charisma and becoming the very definition of charisma. Over the past 100 years, there are hardly any Best Picture Oscar winners that have at least equal let alone more of a thrill factor, or entertainment value. Snipes is more famous for playing Blade, but Passenger 57 is unequivocally the superior movie. Racial politics is excellently used into the story, and other pivotal cultural references are part of the script, and they too appropriately so. Of course Cutter isn't a Republican: why the hell would he be, given the film he's in is about the harsh realities of capitalist society (and the same goes for Rane himself, who's allowed to be self-aware of America's left vs. right paradigm).
