My understanding is that Southwest 737's do not call out altitudes until they hit 100 feet.
@AM-dw2eq
@AM-dw2eq 6 ай бұрын
True. The only automated callouts are “100, 50, 30, 10”. However on approach the PM calls “1000 feet”, which the PF repeats along with airspeed and sink rate. And then the PM also calls “500”. So I don’t think they got that low without knowing it, they just thought they were closer to the airport than they were because of some navigation error that hopefully will be revealed internally at least.

Got to 200 feet, didn't see the runway, aborted and diverted. During the go-around the aircraft might have dipped a little lower due to engine spool up time but this sounds like a standard missed approach.

fuel costs and BASING for the airline
@overyourheadtampa
@overyourheadtampa 5 ай бұрын
Before a flight is ever boarded, the pilots or logistics group for the airline have to select alternate airports as the destination in cases where the main destination is closed or unable to land. They are required to carry enough fuel on board to make the main flight, plus make to the alt destination with x time of fuel remaining with a normal landing at the alternate. They also know the price of fuel and airlines likely set preferred alternative airports with this in mind so refueling isn't as expensive. Could also be landing fees for commercial traffic that vary based on the airport which drives the decision for alternative destinations, or even crew timeouts and availability that may also be a reason. A lot goes into alternative airport decisions.

Given the prevailing weather conditions shown in the video, it is puzzling why the pilots chose to fly an uncoupled visual approach. Runway 10 offers both ILS and RNAV approaches, which are typically followed in such weather. As a commercial pilot operating under Part 91, I would utilize these approaches even in my small general aviation planes, let alone in Part 121 operations.

The air traffic controller was a life saver. It’s very concerning that this happened too many times in the last weeks. What is going on with Southwest pilots????? This should not have happened. The FAA needs to scrutinize this issue asap.

Pilot would not say low on gas. And how could they go to FT Laud if they were ? With plenty of airports close by like Mcdill or Lakeland St pete-Clw etc...that can handle a 737.

It's frustrating watching the media report on aviation related incidents. They have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, its so embarrassing. This one was pointless

I have actively avoided southwest airlines since the first time I flew. Something about their seating arrangement with no assigned seats never sat well with me. I have read so many stories of people holding seats and being choosy about who they allow to sit next to them. I have more reason to avoid them now.

@@paulhill7818 yes I think I saw that shortly after this post. I still won’t fly with them.

I can understand flying lower to avoid turbulence and bad weather. That sounds reasonable, but running out of gas shouldn't happen on a planned flight.

Why would passengers complain anyways. That would be so cool to be scud running on a big Jet. Stop your whining and take the bus next time.

Great job interviewing an actual commercial pilot….Oh wait. I guess a nervous passenger is just as good

The pilots could clearly see the ground and their instruments, and though they were relatively close to the causeway they were in no danger of crashing. I trust them far more than I trust that reporter at the controls.
