As a Brit, I find it insane that cities the size of Pittsburgh have such run down stations and FOUR trains a day!

Pittsburgh’s airport had over 8.1 million passengers in 2022. That would be #8 in the UK but is well outside of the top #40 in the US. Does this clear it up a bit?

Geography, airline/ airport subsidies and the petroleum and real estate lobbies in federal and state governments are all issues with rail in the U.S.

I was at that station in March. As the man in video says, it's an embarrassment and a joke! I arrived late at night, and needed to catch a cab to my hotel which was a few miles away. I fully expected to find taxis lined up waiting for fares. When I walked out the door, I was shocked! A dimly lit, pothole filled alleyway. Not a cab in sight! I went back and a told the agent, who had called a taxi for me, and she said you might have better luck standing in front of the Greyhound Terminal just around the corner. When I got there I couldn't believe the difference! A bright, beautiful building bustling with activty! Amtrak has to do better here!

Getting a taxicrom that place is always a hassel. Not the best place to wait for a train or cab.

That old station was beautiful.

If the city and Amtrak got together they could make the station better. All transportation needs don't revolve around airports.

Well, they did fix the escalator 😂

Well, if the outfit that owns Penn Station would allow them to use it, it would be nicer

The city of Pittsburgh and Amtrak need to get together to make it better. Talking to city council criiters sometimes does some good.

They added like 5 new amtrak stations in New York State including Buffalo which is awesome.

Why did they leave the old station for this dump?? Also, were have the tax payers $ been going for this station? Fed govt, PA state govt, local govt give $ to this. This is gross incompetents and willful neglect. Another failure by govt and waste of money over the years.

The station itself is owned by Norfolk Southern. There’s your problem.

@@SebisRandomTechin the seventies, Penn Central sold is to the feds (GSA), at which point Amtrak wanted the whole thing, but Buncher bought all but what we see now, that Amtrak got. NS owns the tracks (and some say the platforms).

As far as I know this was the only station used by Amtrak. The other two stations in Pittsburgh were used by the B&O and the Pittsburg and Lake Erie railroads. This was the old PRR and Penn Central station and was the only one used by Amtrak.
@jaysmith140810 ай бұрын
@@johnchambers8528 correct, Penn was the Pennsy, then Penn Central, and Amtrak. Grant Street was B&O and the PATrain (before the current AVR connection at 32nd street), and Station Square was the P&LE/B&O. Not to forget the Wabash Station in the vicinity of Gateway Centre (tracks, tunnels, and bridge repurposed for the T).

I have ridden Amtrak to Pittsburgh several times from Philadelphia and this station does need improvements. Compared to many of the other stations on this line it is a disgrace for a major city. I know it is hard to justify spending a lot of money on a station that only serves four trains a day but there is no reason that the station should be so rundown. At least make sure the escalator works and have a clean well lighted entrance since especially in winter all the trains arrive or depart when it still may be dark.

Johnstown only sees the Pennsylvanian, and is in far better shape, and absolutely gorgeous. Greensburg is the same way, and has a really good restaurant (though if I recall, it’s not open for breakfast before the Eastblund train). Pittsburgh’s amenities are the same as those in Tyrone, and I’d rather be in Tyrone. From what I’ve seen, Pittsburgh’s station is the worst on the line, never mind that Westbound passengers have a four hour connection (if the cap is on time), and Eastbound passengers have a three hour connection (in the wee hours of the morning…if the cap is on time).

Cleveland Station is also a dump, compared to the Majestic Cleveland Union Terminal which Amtrak left! We need more folks like Conrail, a true visionary from the days of Conrail.
