That was really nice. Relaxing and I too liked looking at the small towns and the houses by the tracks. Now I mention this before but I will say it again. Imagine I am there with my 3 to 4 year old son who does not mind me and does not want to sleep or play with a toy or read a book or look out the window he just wants to run up and down the aisle over and over screaming and crying and get snacks every few hours. LOL. I took train from Richmond Virginia to Phoenix Arizona many years ago and I was at my wits end with my son and thankfully a nice man and his teenage sons saw I was having so much trouble so they took over. It was like a 3 day trip and thank God they were going further than me to California. As soon as we got to our destination my Daddy was there to pick us up . Before I even say hello how are u I ask him to please please please pay for us plane tickets back home even tho I had round trip tickets. And he did. So if u take Amtrak I hope your kids are grown so u can enjoy it. Coach has to be fine as sleeper car cost to much for me. LOL

The first thing I noticed in your video was how full the cars were. It makes you confident that ridership is coming back up post-Covid, and speaks well of Amtrak's financial sustainability. I've looked at several videos of the high speed trains in Japan, trying to get a feel for what their trains are like because they are the ones supposedly going on the anticipated (but maybe not?) high speed rail line in Texas, and in every one, their cars are almost completely deserted! I always thought the Japanese trains had such heavy ridership, but apparently not!

I love riding the train. Haven't in a few years but always ride The City of New Orleans from Memphis, TN to Union Station in Chicago. I get one of the roomettes which includes meals in the dining car and drinks (alcohol not included). You can go to the dining room or have your attendant bring your food to you. They also have a lounge car that has huge windows and a fast food cafe downstairs. At Union Station there's a lounge/waiting area just for 1st class and passengers on a sleeping car. You get to get on the train first and in my case (have trouble with my feet) I get a ride down to the sleeper car. There's also free snacks and drinks. You have to buy a coach class ticket and pay for the room but you only pay for the room once. So if you get a roomette and have 2 people you buy 2 coach tickets and only pay once for the room. No extra for more than one person. My last trip to Chicago I was sitting on the toilet when my butt suddenly went up and slammed back down. At first I thought, did we crash then realized we were still moving. Came out and my attendant asked if I was ok. I told him yes but he nearly had to pry my butt out of the toilet. He laughed. We went over the top of a big tree laying on the tracks. There is nothing like laying in your bunk and going to sleep to the rocking motion and the train whistle blowing.

Thanks for sharing all that info. I plan on getting a roomette when I go across the country.

Having traveled Amtrak coach many times, for shorter trips of 200 - 300 miles in state the seats are ok and you can relax pretty good. I once traveled from Tampa to New York City ( Coach ) and that was a big mistake ! There is no way to really get comfortable on a long trip and sleeping is very difficult. I also found that all passengers are not concerned with being quiet as some have movies or music very loud at all times of the day and night. If you are traveling out of states anywhere, get a small sleeper and you will be glad you did. I love trains and will always ride them as I'm not in a hurry and I also just love the thrill of being on a train.

Nice overview of the experience. I have one thing to add. If you live near a station served by trains that depart at a reasonable time, take advantage of it. Just book passage to anywhere and go! Where I live, the nearest station is an hour and a half away and the trains leave at 1:30 AM going east, 2:00 AM going west. I've done it, but the experience left two things to be desired: 1. sunlight to see the scenery, 2. sleep.

Harry Chapin said it well; "It's got to be the going, not the getting there, that's good." For so many, the destination is the key so much, that the journey itself is sadly lost. Even when I moved to Texas, as much as the destination WAS important, the JOURNEY I made a point to cherish. And considering I made the journey to and from 3 times in the course of 6 days, I still saw something I missed on the previous passing. Keep your peepers watching, because one never knows what is out there unless you take the time to see it.
