If you are a seasoned cruiser or traveler, you must know that a valid passport is required and have a date of expire 6 months past the last day of your trip. Some countries strictly enforce this requirement. It looks like the round trip 'rule' gets travelers in trouble.

I had a friend who took their birth certificate to cruise I think with Royal. They were denied boarding because the birth certificate they took was the “one for show” given by the hospital which is not the official certificate filed with the county or state. He needed the official certificate with the embossed state seal. So they went to Disney World instead.

I got a passport years ago because it makes travel easier. You don't have to worry about "if" it is acceptable as you do with a birth certificate. You dont have to worry about getting home if something happens and you have to stay in Port (medical, or other reasons).

I am in my seventies. I started out in the airline industry and 1969 and that 6-month rule was in place way back then too. In fact I remember leaving the United Kingdom with 8 months remaining on my passport back in the seventies, and the UK agent reminded me that I only had 8 months left on it.

as a former cruise travel agent, I NEVER gave anyone a "yes" or "no" answer to ANYTHING about what kind of documents were needed for traveling! I always guided them to the cruise line website, told them DIRECTLY how to get to the travel documents section, and THE REST WAS UP TO THEM! At the same time explained to them, that IF they were at a foreign port and had ANY KIND of emergency that required them to FLY anywhere that airlines always required passports, that is why WE ALWAYS SUGGESTED current passports as far as required documentation! The people that would blow me off due to the cost of Passports for their whole family.....MINDBOGGLING!!!!

I think the passport cruisers are just saying that to blame the cruise industry instead of taking responsibility for their laziness. Common sense would tell you to update well before it expires. I just recently updated my passport, and since Covid, they've made it easier by allowing you to do it online.

Martinique you have to have a passport, we have a cruise to Canada and Greenland. Passports are needed. They have to expire AFTER 3 months from the cruise. So much easier to have a passport and remember the 6 month rule. It works out to like 14 bucks a year, cuts back on paperwork. ALSO, another reason trip insurance is something everyone should have so you are not out of money. A yearly policy covers everyone in your house, normally.

This is why travel agents are vital. Many times you can call customer service and get one answer then call back 5 minutes later and get a completely different answer. Travel agents go through training and have direct contacts with business development managers to get the clearest and most accurate aNswers.

as a prior cruise travel agent, I cannot tell you how many people argued with me on the phone about travel documentation. I ALWAYS directed them to the specific cruise line website travel documentation website and VERY KINDLY explained as much as I could to them, but HERE was all the info "per the cruise line" (so they could never come back and say that I gave the bad information!!) READ ALL THE FINE PRINT!!! That is my VERY STRONG SUGGESTION to anyone and everyone! So, as a Travel Agent that IS WELL AWARE that if I am accused of giving improper information.....I always let them read it for themselves!!!!

Do not call the cruise line about passport requirement issues. Those are questions for the State Department, Homeland Security and the ports you are visiting. Can the Cruise line answer your question? Sure. Is the Cruise Line rep trained on boarder control for every nation they anchor? No. I wouldn’t be surprised if their systems don’t even include that info for customer service. A good rep should just tell the customer to contact the State Department or and/ or the Embassy / Consulate of the ports of call. Or really just check their tourism websites. Personally Cruise lines should just require a passport. Problem solved. They are stupid easy to get, take only 6 to 12 weeks and good for a decade. Besides it’s crazy to travel out of the country and get off a ship in a foreign port without a passport. God forbid there is a problem or you miss your ship.

I’m a travel agent and anytime I contact customer service with Princess I will always get someone who sounds like they are at sure or if I have to call back for another issue or client, I will ask the next agent the same question and I will often get a different answer. Jay, good things come to good people. It isn't a constant, but the averages are in your favor. I'm sorry about your dad; but it is a blessing that you were able to take care of his final needs because of your work. And as far as passports are concerned, sure they expire in 10 years, but most people have to treat them as expiring in 9 years 6 months because most travel providers and countries do not want to accept a passport that is 6 months or less from expiring.

Basic passport travel information is you should not travel if it is to expire in 6 months or less this is travel in general no matter how you choose to travel. Should the companies employees know better yes so they clearly need to train their staff better. But also as a traveler you should make sure you have all the information. It is out there on the internet they tell you to renew your passport in time so you don’t have issues. Also having been on a cruise where they don’t accept a birth certificate their information about a passport is well documented on cruise lines websites. So as much as anyone wants to blame people for what they were told the correct information was there and they chose to ignore it.

I started the paperwork for a new passport in Feb - because I lost it, I wasn’t planning on traveling until 2023 or 2024, as of July it still didn’t arrive. I didn’t think anything of it, in July I had an amazing opportunity to go on a 2 week trip to Canada. I had my passport card. I checked everywhere and got conflicting information. I looked at the State Dept website, airline website, Canada Website and checked several other sources and guess what everyone had conflicting information. When I called the State Dept to see what the hold up was on my passport, they said I had signed the wrong document - even though I submitted my paperwork through the local Passport Office and they verified it was the correct paperwork and filled out properly. When I asked The State Dept rep if I can go using my PAssport Card they told me no, even though the state dept website and airline website said I could. I had to turn down a dream opportunity because I couldn’t get a straight, consistent answer. I chose not to go because no official source gave me a consistent answer. Of course I found my passport, literally a few days after the event I was invited to attend. If I asked here if I could use a passport card I’d probably get a bunch of conflicting answers. So yes, it is quite possible and probable the Cruiseline gave them bad information and all these people did do research and decided to get verification from the cruiseline. It wasn’t one passenger that got turned away, it was a LOT of folks. And generally, you don’t need a passport card for closed loop cruises in the US. For the record the final answer was you can drive over the boarder into Canada from the US with a Passport card, but you can’t fly in - which is nonsense. It’s the “same” customs agency.

It's on the passenger to make sure they have all the necessary procedures done. I have been watching a lot of different travel shows lately and the main topics seem to be (to kick off the New Year) is travel insurance and updated passports. I thought that you had to give your passport information to the cruise line ahead of time. Lesson learned as I say. I just checked ours and thank goodness we have until 2027. I put a reminder on my phone calendar to start the process 8 months before the passport expires. Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!!

U.S. Travel & Immigration are the ultimate authority and source for required documentation. The cruise lines merely follow the law. The USA Customs Agents make the final determination as to whether passengers will be denied boarding. My husband was denied once because his naturalization certificate had his picture when he was 8 yrs old but he forgot his D/L license; his parents were with us. The cruise line was fine with it; it was US Customs who stepped in and denied him boarding. After that, I renewed my passport & got passports for my 3 children. Hubby still uses his naturalization certificate. Great channel & content. Condolences on the loss of your father. My Dad went home to be with the Lord a long time ago. I miss him every day … you reminded me that he is my Angel ❤. You did your Dad & family proud … May your blessings be abundant & your trials, few. Best wishes for an amazing 2023!

I had unknowingly left my passport at home. I did not notice until the morning we were leaving for our cruise. I called Carnival customer service, and they said I could present a copy of either my passport or birth certificate. I called my sister in California to send me a copy of my passport. Went to Port Canaveral and then was told a copy of my passport wasn't sufficient. A copy of my birth certificate would be acceptable. Had to call my sister back and ask her to go back to my place and send me a copy of my birth certificate. I had to email this to someone who handled documents. After I emailed it, it was still another 45 minutes to an hour before they called my name to clear me for boarding. I am leaving in a few days to cruise with Princess, and my passport is the first thing I put in my luggage.

Always look for answers to your questions on the cruise lines app or website. The vast majority of information you need is there. If you have to call customer service because something isn't there or isn't clear, keep this in mind. A lot of those people are new and may not know the rules or laws. They may or may not be willing to look up the correct information. Ask them to send you verification of what they're telling you in writing. Especially if what they're saying doesn't make sense. Bring this to the port with you. Ultimately it's not their vacation that's going to be ruined and thousands of dollars of their money wasted if you're denied boarding. Saying someone in customer service verbally told you something is not proof.

I have also found that now-a-days, if you get info too far in advance, it can change before boarding / flying. I haven't used a travel agent in decades, but with everything going on, I just don't need the hassle of flight/hotel/ship changes in my life. So, I'm going with your sponsor for 2024 (I have all my plans already done for 2023). I was prompted by your comments and the comments of a few other channels I subscribe to as well as MAJOR issues with flying to/from Brazil in 2022. Fingers crossed.

You have to do your own research get names department get them to send you email in writing take time to read yourself what u need I have never heard that that was ok. It has always said when u return the date on passport has to have 6 months before expiration date!

Sometimes the cruise and customer service MAY be correct but the the ultimate authority is always going to be the port authority. Because even if the cruise line would approve you sailing with a certain document, if the port authority says "no" for any reason, they have ultimate right to deny you boarding. Moral of this story is get your passport or your passport card and keep it up to date if you want to travel anywhere. Even Canada and Mexico have over the years looked at requiring this for travel, so it is better safe than learning the hard way that your vacation will be ruined.

Get both a passport card and a passport. Take pictures of all your documents and make photocopies and store them in different places. I store copies of all important papers in the cloud, so I can access them from anywhere. Saves a lot of grief

I usually book via a travel agent and they NEVER said yay or nay and always redirected me to the cruise line’s website. That passport expiration date is critical. I always check it.

I sailed this ship in 2019 and they told me minor children were required to have a passport even if both parents were aboard. Adults were able to use birth certificate but children needed a passport.

I would never trust a cruise line customer service rep to give me legal advice. I also wouldn't trust a cruise line website, for people advising to do that instead. And I also wouldn't trust a travel agent, even if it gives you someone to blame when something goes wrong. Beling allowed to get back into your own country, or to stay in a foreign country, is a legal issue, not a cruise-line policy issue. You might need to divert for emergency medical care, or to change your itinerary due to a personal emergency, medical emergency, war breaking out, natural disaster, or whatever.... is not something you want to take a company's word for. They want it to sound easy, so you'll spend your money. In fact, protecting yourself sometimes takes crossing every t and dotting every i, yourself. Get all the legal requirements and options, directly from the governments of the countries involved, including your own! Or from an attorney specializing in it. This extends beyond passports. It includes knowing the laws in each country you visit, so you don't end up with your country having to trade an arms dealer in a prisoner swap for you. It includes knowing driver's license requirements if you want to rent a car. It includes knowing immunization requirements in both the old sense, and now in the Covid sense also. It includes knowing what documents you need in order to keep from being arrested for carrying your meds. Many things. Do your research, people. Don't get your advice from companies selling you the trip.

so many judgmental people who like to pretend like they know every damn thing and are perfect always comment on these videos. Empathy for your fellow passengers is something that rarely appears. A lot of you are not welcoming people to the cruising “lifestyle,” you are turning us non experienced cruisers off. It’s a new year can’t some of you pretend to be kind human beings for at least a day?

You need a current passport to travel. But I will say I changed my name to my husband’s last name but didn’t update my passport because it had 6 years. I called Royal Caribbean ahead and looked online and they said I could bring my marriage license and driver’s license and birth certificate. I show up and they are trying to figure out if I could go and ended up changing my reservation name to my maiden name.

I live in China, as an expat. The golden rule is ALWAYS keep your passport up to date. You don't wait to the last moment, and you don't get to play victim, and you don't get to hedge the margins. If you are planning to leave the country and cross national boundaries, your passport is sacred and it should be treated as such. For these people mentioned in their video, they should have had their passport drama sorted before even getting on the ship. I have only had one cruise in my lifetime, but I have travelled a lot internationally and this is a "no duh" issue.

And the News reporter tried to make it look like it was the cruise-lines fault. I guess the reporter should have done some research on the rules for cruising. As a cruiser it is your responsibility to make sure you have all your paperwork done right. It is written in all the rules.

Getting a passport renewal in a week is a thing even in covid times. It is def risky but I personally know folks who have done it. I had unexpected travel and had to get it updated with only 5 weeks notice before the trip. I was able to do it expedited through the mail. With this type of cruise, they knew the trip was coming a long time. The passport centers are not experiencing the delays they had in 2021 and early 2022. 3 months beyond travel is often the minimum, 6 months beyond travel dates is a good rule for passport requirements.
