Disruptive passengers. What do pilots and cabin-crew think about them, how do we deal with them and who pays for the mess and disruption they create?
In todays video you will get the answers to all of this and more!
I also have a video QUESTION for you, baked into the video, so stay alert!

It always pays to be nice. I was late for a flight and when I got to the gate it had closed and the plane was reversing off. There was also a young mother with her kid who also just missed the flight. The mother was screaming abuse at the gate attendant ordering her to bring the plane back and let us on. Eventually we ended up at the booking desk together to get another flight. Here she was equally rude and was told there were no more flights for the day. I then approached the desk and asked the same question and the nice lady said (quite loudly) "there's room on the next flight in 2 hours we can put you on that free of charge" I thanked her from the bottom of my heart and that was that.

I'm a Passenger Service Agent (the guys that help you during the check-in and boarding process) and we're trained to decide whether a passenger should board a plane or not, given how disruptive they are. Most probably they had already decided that the lady must not board a plane given how volatile her behavior is hehe

When a passenger is unruly on the ground there is a great chance they a going to be unruly in the air, as a precaution it is safe to deny them boarding. flying is a privilege, not a right that is why we tolerate all kinds of inconveniences at the airport

Sorry but that's not a good story. It just shows that they lack empathy and will provide you service if you kissed up to them. Do you know why this lady was hysterical to missing her flight? maybe she needed to get to a hospital to see her dad at his final moments? maybe a job interview she really needed? did they try to talk to her and see what's wrong and how they can help? I don't excuse her behavior but there are cases where people lose it for factors that are big, because life can come at you fast sometimes and you gotta catch a flight for a life changing event and would get hysterical if you miss it by a hairline.

I agree as well. Whilst the Cabin Crew is ultimately trained and charged with ensuring the safety and security of the cabin and its passengers, the pilot is responsible for the safety of the aircraft and the flight that entails. I can see that the one time the pilot(s) may be forced to intervene is if said disruptive passenger(s) attempted or have managed breach the cockpit and have proven to be a real threat to both the aircraft as well as the crew/passengers.

Modern anti-terrorist rules should certainly prevent the captain to go around the plane talking to somebody. This might be a trick to have a pilot get out and disable him. What is the point in having the cockpit locked, if a pilot can be attracted out of the cockpit by a passenger?

Once had a flight where we diverted and a drunk passenger was dropped off in Greece. He was restrained in a straight jacket thing for threatening to break the window. The Captain had to first issue a formal letter of final warning before restraining and diverting. The Greek police complained to the captain because it's illegal to film the police there but obviously the whole aircraft filmed his removal. The captain convinced them to let it go but he had to tell us over the intercom to delete any footage we had but it was unenforceable.

I saw a video on youtube where a lady was wearing a very offensive cap and the cabin crew could no longer deal with her. The Captain then stepped in before take-off and told her in a very stern way that if she does not put away that cap the aircraft will not depart or he will have her manually removed . He was an elderly pilot but he adhered to all principals that you were talking about. well done!!

I've only flown a handful of times. Probably 10-12 flights in total. Not a huge number. I just cannot comprehend why people are disruptive on flights. It just makes no sense to me. Cabin crew don't have the worst job in the world but they don't have an easy job either. They are there to serve the passengers but most importantly, to keep everyone safe. The flight crew especially. I see cabin crew at a similar level to police or fire service personnel. Because if there is a problem. those ladies and gents are going to be the only thing between the passengers and death. They will be standing their ground, taking charge, pushing people out to safety. Putting themselves last. Putting the passengers first. I might be putting them on a slightly over the top pedestal. To me though, when I get on a plane. I smile, greet, make eye contact. Thank them properly. Even for just the free drink or packet of peanuts. I've only flown economy. However I intend to go business for my next flight to NYC from the UK (not that this is likely to happen any time soon). I've always been treated extremely well and never felt like it is a bother to be polite. Honestly, if I saw another passenger being abusive, I'd be the first to help the cabin crew if things got physical. I remember on one flight to Nuremberg, the cabin crew moved my seat to the emergency exit with more leg room. I never asked for that seat, they put me there. I thanked them and on leaving, I did ask why I was moved. Wondering if it was because I am a big guy and they wanted to balance the plane or something ;-). No, it was done because they thought I looked and acted like someone that could help them control people at the wing emergency exit. Lone passenger, polite, strong and helpful I was told. Plus, they said the staff thought I'd appreciate the extra leg room. Seeing as I was nice. Being nice is always appreciated, it might not get you in first class but it won't cost you a penny. Sorry for the long post.

Interestingly, there is a peculiar reason why some people turn distruptive on board a flight. While saying so, i am not counting those stupid people who think that they bought the aeroplane with the crew ..... when they bought a seat). Back to the subject, if we could analyse these "difficult" passengers, we will know that most of them suffer some form of Flight Anxiety. Many a times, the anxiety gets triggered for silliy reasons and they become unruly. United Nations (International Civil Aviation Organisation) estimates that worldwide 4 in every 10 air travellers suffer some form of Flight Anxiety.

I experienced a really scary flight some years ago actually. I was on a flight with my family from Ålesund in Norway to Antalya in Turkey, and the most of the trip were really relaxed. But there were one person that drank a lot of alcohol and got really drunk during the flight. During the later stages of the flight he decided he wanted to have a smoke, but the cabin crew told him not to. But he did several attempts at this, but were playing along with the cabin crew when they told him to sit down and put his smoke away. 10 minutes before we were going to land at the airport, the landing procedures had been going for some time. Now he decided to take a smoke again, and the cabin crew once again had to tell him not to. But this time he decided not to play along anymore. He got really aggressive towards the crew, cursing and even got physical at them. They needed help, and a couple of the passengers tried help the cabin crew out, but he got just more aggressive. He was threatening of hijacking the plane to land the plane himself so he could smoke (yes, how logic isn't that). At this point, the captain of the plane got out to help sort things out. But the aggressive passenger saw this as an opportunity and hit the captain right in his face, falling down in the cockpit. He got up and started fighting with the captain inside the cockpit, while the other pilot were trying to hold the plane under control. Now several more of the passengers got involved, and were able to pull him back to a seat and hold him down until they landed the plane. 5 or 6 people had to hold him the whole time, since he was constantly fighting back. The plane landed at the military part of the airport, and fully suited military police men with assault rifles stormed inside the plane to get him. And I remember so well when we got the signal to get out, I saw the captain standing inside the cockpit bleeding from his forehead, and several instruments inside the cockpit smashed to pieces. That was a really scary flight, and I'm glad the pilots managed to stay calm and get the plane down safely, even how stressed they might've been.

Pity you cant just give them a parachute and drop them out the bottom. Hello! I am new to your community here. I subbed about a week ago. I just find your videos so well put together. Your intro and outro sequences are spot on. Your info and presentation is absolutely solid. It's also great to see someone in your position finding the time to support your industry in such a way! It's commonly believed, at least by those in my circles, that pilots are overworked and underpaid. I've had a fascination with aviation, and in particular commercial jets, for more than 25 years now. But most people find the story of how that came to be somewhat boring so I won't bore you here, I just wanted to emphasise that I like what you do! For the cup holder question, I know it's been a while since you asked, but I guarantee you I've not seen the answer anywhere or read any comments etc. I would say at least four. two for each the pilot and first officer, one for hot drinks, one for cold. And another set for the flight engineer if the plane is a model that requires one. Either that, or it's a trick question and it's none. I imagine space is a premium inside a cockpit, and if you wanted a drink, just like a bathroom break, you would just go through the procedure to leave the cockpit and get it from the galley. Although, I imagine you are waited on by cabin crew for refreshments, so I'll go with four. Argh! Too many variables! Thank you! And I hope YOU, Sir, are doing absolutely fantastic!

This is really quite interesting... I flew from Japan to Germany a few years ago and had a young couple (with a small child) cause quite a ruckus during what is a 12-14 hour flight (and a night one at that). After 5 hours i asked them to stop and both parents starts hurling absuvive comments and getting physically threatening (getting up and telling me that i would get a beating) (theres more to this story but its beside the point). The cabin crew simply closed the compartement divider and let it go ahead... I understand that no action might sometimes be the best action but no warnings or things like that happened, either towards me or the other passangers. The cabin crew even ignored the calls i made for them. Everything calmed down after half an hour - fourty minutes but it still wasnt a very fun experience. What did the cabin crew actually do and was that a judgement on their end or simply a lack of care?

A Controller's life is normally pretty dull, very much alike every day. But one day in 2011 a Tecnam was hijacked in an Aerodrome South of Portugal and forced to take off with one pilot, a handful of parajumpers and an armed and very disturbed man of board. Somehow the pilot set course to LPCS, where I worked, and once on final all the parajumpers managed to bail out by surprise. The pilot cut the engine, commiting the aircraft to land, and once on the ground he exited the plane and ran away like hell. The hijacker exited the plane too and fatally shot himself in the head. In another instance a deranged men was found strolling on the runway at night. Our Follow Me was sent to take him out - we had no Police Station back then - but somehow the deranged fellow ousted the driver, got hold of the vehicle, and proceeded to crash the Follow Me against two parked aircraft and the Aerodrome gate. He ended up arrested, the Follow Me was wrecked, and the whole traffic had to divert. It sure was a very exciting evening!

I really appreciate the opening part, where you acknowledged what some passengers go through. I believe you that flight crew must go through training for that (in terms of being understanding), but I rarely see it in practice. A lot of times flight crew, especially here in the US, act like gods and are waiting for a mistake to boss you around or kick you off the flight. A lot of times I've been to flights being miserable from a number of things, first i had to take it due to family emergency, then had to get to the airport after a full working day, then deal with the lines, the TSA, and all the headache for hours just to get on a flight, and then get confronted by some flight attendants that add fuel to fire... this isn't to generalize, but it really should be drilled in during training that most passengers already had a rough time by the time they got on the flight, and some worse than others. Now I am not talking about the second type you mentioned, which is disruptive passengers that should be dealt with swiftly. In such cases, by the way, I rarely saw them follow the three steps approach you shared..usually they just resort to the last step of kicking someone out.

Just off the top of my head, I think I've been on 19-20 flights since I was a kid and I've actually never seen a disruptive passenger. I was personally yelled at as a kid twice (once for kicking the seat in front of my when I was 5 and apparently running through the whole plane non-stop for 2 hours when I was 2), but y'know...kids.

Hi Mentour , thank you for the interesting video! A follow up question to ask: I've read in captain training manuals that captains do have quite a large discretion to refuse to carry deported passengers or even escorted prisoners .. would they also be required to fill out forms in this case or is it completely up to the captain?
@MentourPilot
@MentourPilot 6 жыл бұрын
It’s always up to the captain but all decisions have to be properly motivated afterwards. A refusal to carry someone have to be extra motivated.

A little story of mine that was shaped from personal experience. So I was on a flight from Khartoum, Sudan to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with an A330 on Saudia airlines. We were on final aporoach, and ,as usual, everyone was strapped into their seats - or atleast I thought so. One passenger decided to stay standing despite the cabin crew emphasizing to stay seated. One of the flight attendants started shouting 'sit down!' over and over again, but the passenger seemed to refuse. In the end, we got on the ground safely, and no one was injured. However, I'm not sure how the disruptive passenger was dealt with after the flight.

I was on a TWA TriStar flight from San. Fran. to NY (there is a clue there as to how long ago that was). An elderly man across the aisle suffered a heart attack. It was the most rapid decent I've ever experienced, going down into O'Hare Chicago. Paramedics came on board and took him off (and his baggage I assume) and we were on our way again. I understand there is a medical center on west coast of US that communicates with crews in-flight regarding medical emergencies.

I’m going to say two cup holders, one either side of the cockpit directly under the side windows. If cup holders are located anywhere near electrical panels there’s a risk of spillage during turbulence so they’re located within reach but far enough away from electrical equipment not to cause too many problems. Of course, I have no idea if the jump seat has one located up in the corner?? Absolutely love your content on your Channel, there’s a clear contrast between yourself and captain Joe but that’s what I like about you both. Big thumbs up 👍

What if things escalate way too much and for example the disruptive passenger starts punching people or something and the cabin crew isn't able to calm this person down? Are other passengers allowed to interfere and apprehend the passenger or there's an actual procedure in this case? Appart from diverting (I mean, crazy people can do a lot in 15 - 30 minutes that a divertion may take)

One time, I was on a 747 flight from one end of the country to the other - about 3000 km. Boarding etc proceeded normally until the cabin crew closed the doors. Then apparently a woman seated 2 rows behind a door started making a fuss. I was seated just in front of this door, so I could hear everything that was going on. Apparently the woman had a fear of confinement. First, a hostess tried to calm her. It almost worked, but when she was assisted with her seatbelt, she went off again. Then the purser had a go at calming her down. Each time, after much calm words, he asked her if she would like to continue with the flight, she replied something like "Yes, I do, I'm sorry I'm such trouble." But, every time, when asked to put on seat belt, she went off again. After 20-30 minutes of this, the captain came down and he had a go at calming her and getting her to agree to sit down and put on her belt. He spent 15 minutes doing that. I (and I guess most other passengers) got pretty fed up - I was wishing he would just simply kick her off the plane, or give her a vallium or something. Eventually, he gave up and told the cabin crew to open the door and he told her to sit down and belt up now, or get off. He told her that if she did get off, other airlines would be notified and she would never be permitted to fly again. That made her dither at the door for another 5 minutes. Then she announced, "yes, I'm getting off" and out she went. Whereupon 2 young teenagers suddenly got up and left with her, angrily saying "Mum, mum - we are going to miss the wedding!". Then we had to wait another 30 minutes or more for her and her kid's baggage to be unloaded. All up, we were delayed about 2 hours. Mr Mentour, can you do a video on typical airline handing of people who express fear of confinement or fear of flying? I wonder who in this case paid for the wasted fuel keeping the engines idling for 2 hours just because a silly woman couldn't make up her mind.

Something similar happened to a person I know, who was flying with my group but in another plane. She began having a panicking behaviour, a crew member arrived with a glass of "water", certainly a sedative, she drank it and relaxed. I don't think that much more than "drink this" was told to her. I always wondered what would have happened if she had has some form of intolerance or adverse reaction to the sedative.
