I will say, for the first story, a huge part of what got me into knitting was the loud clicking of the needles... it's a satisfying sound to me. So in that first story, the op asking the knitter to stop makes total sense to me. I may like it but I'm acutely aware of how loud and distracting the sound might be in a live performance setting.

I’m a knitter as well and I get it too. Sometimes I’ll switch to plastic or wood tips if I know the sound of metal clicking is annoying to someone I know, and will be around. Or I’ll bring a quieter project to be accommodating. People just need to be polite when asking for accommodations, because it’s not inherently rude to knit or crochet in public

Absolutely. I have hyperacusis and this would distract the hell out of me too. I love knitting and crocheting as a focus tool when I'm listening, but not respecting your surroundings is just rude. That being said, we only got one side of the story so there's that I guess.

I don't knit but I would assume it's just like getting annoyed at someone clicking a pen, hearing them click the pen over and over and over makes me so angry, but if I have the pen I can click it all day it's super fun, I don't want to hear someone clicking a pen yk? Especially if I'm trying to pay attention to something it's very very hard to pay attention when this repetitive noise is happening as an autistic individual

For the first AITA, I think it greatly depends on the type of show. Clearly this Folk music "event" is similar to attending a symphony. I attend these regularly and ANY noise at all can be heard through the music, no matter how quiet that noise is. Knitting needles would definitely be rude and ruin the music everyone else. At events like this, it is inappropriate. At events that are louder and less formal, such as movies as mentioned or other genres of music, go for it! Each type of event is different and I think we need to understand this point a little more.

But it sounds like there was empty seats not by the knitting lady. OP could have also just moved to the open seat from the start, and not started with a question.

Thoughts on knitting in a relationship: my husband and I are married for 2 years, but have been together for 8 years. I picked up knitting as a hobby about a year ago and he is super supportive of it. He always said I needed a hobby, and he always wants to take me yarn shopping now. I realize that I do spend a lot of time knitting, and I’m the one that feels guilty that I may not be showing enough attention to him. I sometimes ask him “are you mad that I’m knitting right now? Do you want me to stop while we watch tv?” And he’s always like “No! Do you whatever you want. If it makes you happy, go right ahead!”

A crocheted dress would probably also need a slip, & the fitting & tension of the design would be so hard to achieve without a pattern. The offer of a shawl is such a much better item, because there are no fit issues, & it could be accomplished in the time available. I agree with you that some details of the story seem to be missing, but I don't think that anyone should expect a friend to make them a wedding dress.

42:46 when she said it was short notice she definitely meant that it wasn’t a lot of time for people to prepare. I don’t know what month this was, but generally people plan wedding for at least a year in advance. If it’s January and they’re getting married in April then that doesn’t leave friends and family much time to get off work, buy gifts, get flights if they live far away, etc. She also says that “even a skilled crocheter” would need at least 2 months for this project. To me that says the wedding less than 2 months away, but could be 3 or 4 away and she’s estimating that it would take her quite a bit longer than 2 months. In addition, all of her other friends gifts were free. I think the story implies that the friend said she wanted her gift to be her wedding dress. If payment was offered, I assume the OP would have said so. But even if the friend offered payment, I think the issue here is that OP clearly doesn’t have enough time to complete the project. The friend is TA because she’s is expecting a n extravagant project worth thousands of dollars for free, and is unwilling to accept any compromise. She accuses OP of playing favorites for giving all her other friends gloves and scrunchies, when clearly she is entitled and wanting a gift worth hundreds of times what the others were, would take months instead of hours or days, and is like a hundred times the size. This is very cut and dry to me. OP is NTA.

Super hearing is one of my autism things… I would be absolutely bonkers by the end of a concert if I had to hear someone else clicking their needles together. I’d probably pull a to-go project from my bag if I saw the person next to me was knitting though

I would definitely get annoyed if someone next to me was knitting while we were at an event. I cant tune out incessant constant noises like that. In my apartment when the AC is on it will slightly vibrate the walls and will cause a little buzz sound where picture frames touch the wall or where the door meets the doorframe. It bothers me so much. My husband doesnt even notice it but when I hear it i cant get it out of my head until i find where its coming from an adjust whatever is causing the buzz sound to make it stop. I crochet so i understand that people want to bring projects with them places but i probably couldnt stand sitting next to a lady knitting with that light clacking sound of the knitting when im trying to focus on something else. I definitely think the knitting lady overreacted. If that were me id feel awkward and say sorry but id either stop or move seats if i really wanted to do it so badly.

I’ve made him 3 beanies over the years and he wears all of them he LOVES them. He will come sit by me and ask what I’m working on and it’s precious. It’s the best and I love reading these comments seeing how many other partners are so sweet and supportive of their woman’s hobbies/passions. ❤

I don’t foresee OP’s relationship lasting. Support your gf man.

So I'm someone who has ADHD and I hate the sound of metal knitting needles since I can't really deal with repetitive noises well. I wouldn't say anything since I don't want to be rude by asking them to put it away since I'll crochet in public so I'll put on my headphones if someone knits with metal needles 😁 Also my bf loves that I crotchet since he likes to assist by undoing knots and pulling out yarn for me.

As for the first story, I go to symphony halls to listen to music and crocheting would definitely be loud. There is no surround sound in places like that so any sound coming from right next to you can’t be drowned out by speakers behind it, all the sound from the music is coming from pretty far in front of you

So about the second story It doesn't matter what the girl was doing, even if she wasn't knitting at all, you DO NOT touch other people's stuff. That is where she over stepped her boundary. The constant questions could be ignored with headphones, but if someone continued to/try to touch my belongings I would have told her to please back off, my stuff (regardless of what it was) was not hers to touch.

That first story - I got called out for crocheting during a paranormal investigation event by the presenters. When the Q&A session, I asked "How do you deal with anxiety during a paranormal investigation? Like I do crochet to deal with mine." That shut people down real fast. I get that the venue was quiet, but a little compassion can go a long way.

I don't think it's unreasonable to understand how someone fidgeting may be distracting. I know my attention can get disrupted with things like that. OP could've moved themselves, or the knitter could've easily scooted over a seat. No idea what was going on with them at the time to be so upset about it, but that's not a huge ask. As for the relationship one, oh boy. Looking at OP's replies, he only seemed to focus on ones that leaned in his favor, which just tells me this relationship isn't going to last. Confronting difficulties, not just compromising, is part of relationships too. It sounds like he wasn't really communicating properly with her. And lord, 30 years old??? I for sure tuned that out and was 100% expecting teens for what he was describing. There are definitely middle grounds to find there, but you have to actually be open to finding them. The top came out great too btw! x'D And thanks for reading replies as well. It always bothers me to watch Reddit videos that don't include some replies! haha

Crocheting a wedding dress for free is insane! The crocheter is making gifts out the goodness of their hearts and this "friend" is clearly trying to take advantage of that to save some bucks for her last-minute wedding. This friend had some nerve throwing a fit when it couldn't be done, especially when a compromise was provided to her (which, OP is waaayyy better than me to even offer that lol)

I knit and crochet all day long, as soon as my son is ready for school, I start knitting or crocheting but when my husband returns home from work, I put aside what I'm working on. The days that he is at home, my days go the same, I knit or crochet all the day and stop around the time he used to come home. If I have yarns to buy, either he brings me to buy them or I give him the reference and he buys them for me. Crocheting and knitting is addictive but as kelsie said they need to set some date time crochet-free, only focused on their couple

The story about the guy getting jealous of his girlfriend’s crochet is funny to me because my boyfriend and I are the same ages as them (we’ve been together for about 7 months) and I crochet while we watch TV together too. We’ve been watching his favorite series (he’s seen it 4 times, I never have) and just last week as he was setting it up, before he pressed play he turned to me and asked “do you have something to crochet? Do you want to grab it first?” We cuddle while I crochet. I also choose not to crochet sometimes to give him my full attention. While he plays video games, I crochet and we’ll take breaks and talk about his game or my project. On long drives, I crochet if he’s driving. Sometimes I won’t so I can hold his hand instead. It is possible to humor each other with your respective hobbies and spend quality time together simultaneously, but sometimes it should be set aside to have one on one time. The guy is weird but also not COMPLETELY wrong (but def like 99% wrong and still definitely the asshole)

First story: depends on the knitting needles if they are loud or not. If I go full speed with my metal needles it's quite loud, definitely loud enough to annoy someone. If I go with bamboo needles it is barely audible. As a neurodivergent person knitting and crocheting (or drawing) enhances my attention, it doesn't remove attention.

I saw a different version of the crochet wedding dress story somewhere. In that story OP was very pregnant and was about to go on maternity leave. The bride-to-be asked for a wedding dress, because OP crocheted stuff for their other friends for their weddings. Bride told OP the wedding date will be in January and OP assumed in 2026, and told her she could do it. The bride corrected her, the wedding will be in january 2025, so that would leave OP a 5 month deadline. OP let out a little nervous laugh before telling bride she would not be able to make it. Bride said "Well, I know who your favourite friends are" and stormed off.

I've been with my partner for almost 5 years. I only started crocheting last October. He's been so supportive of me. I crochet whenever I'm out and about practically. I crochet when I talk to him. I crochet when watching tv. I crochet when we visit family or friends. He completely supports me. That said, maybe she could crochet him something once in a while? I've crocheted so many tiny amigarumi and my bf proudly displays them (even the bad ones) on his desk. He's so proud of the things I've made, but he actually gets to use some of the creations (I'm watching him nap on the couch with our cat under a blanket I made that he loves). No one should HAVE to crochet anything for anyone. I am just noticing this slight detail and curious about it. I do think he might appreciate her hobby more if she made him something. Edit: I'd have to say this as well. If I made something for my bf and he didn't appreciate it, I probably wouldn't crochet him anything else. My partner just happens to be amazing and loves whatever silly things I make.

I completely agree. I fidget more when I'm anxious, and most of the time crocheting is an unobtrusive way to focus enough on something calming that lets me still focus on whatever else is going on. If I'm already stressed and someone says that my calming mechanism is obtrusive/distracting, I'm gonna take that as a cue to opt out of the situation entirely

so the first story... I would be both the person who took a creative thing somewhere, and the person getting super distracted by someone else. I am known to both draw and crochet in social situations. I would not take it to a concert, but yes, I need to do something with my hands. As you can guess, I have adhd. But my specific flavor of adhd makes me super sensitive to noise and motion. I cannot tune a sound out for the life of me. I get super overwhelmed in like classrooms, where other people fidget. Leg bouncing or opening and closing a pen can drive me to unreasonable levels of madness, almost a meltdown. Sensory overwhelm is an awful feeling. I wish I had the power to actually tell someone I find what they do distracting, instead of sucking it up and getting more and more angry inside And for the same reason, if someone found my particular way of fidgeting distracting, I would not get pissed and tried to take the route of accommodating us both

Opera singer here, who also crochets. In all the theaters I have performed at you can't completely see the audience, and half the time you are so focused on what you are doing on stage that you aren't paying attention to what the audience is doing. Also, people walking around, and not staying seated during a performance is annoying. It is fine if someone is knitting in the audience. There is always going to be noise during a concert, or performance.

As for the one about her crocheting while watching tv and him wanting to cuddle I think both could compromise. Like when me and my husband watch tv/movie together at home we normally start out cuddling and then if we’re watching multiple episodes or a movie I’ll then crochet… after we’ve cuddled. Relationships are about compromise and showing love to the other person, it’s not about me me me. It’s about us and they both should be thinking of the other person and trying to make them happy.

First story I would actually say soft YAH AND soft NAH. The knitter's reaction was genuinely kind of bizarre (huffing and basically stomping out) but I'm actually calling soft AH on her because if you want to knit at a quiet venue like this where people are meant to be actively listening, use quieter needles. Soft YAH on OP because it's kind of shitty to ask someone else to move like that. OP could have moved down to the empty seat themselves.

I prefer crochet which is less disruptive BUT, also to put myself into the knitters shoes, I personally would have done my best to choose a seat where there were fewer people so I could I enjoy the show the way I want to but not be disruptive to the other attendees. Crocheting with music helps me count stitches and keep a rhythm so I understand wanting to bring it with them.
