McCoy is an all time favorite of mine and had a big influence on my play style. Here is my transcription of Passion Dance taken from the legendary album ''The Real McCoy'' (1967). It's not perfect but after many months of work it's time for me to move on! If you enjoy please like and subscribe for more transcriptions/original compositions.

McCoy's "Passion Dance" was one of many cues to give up piano. I could never separate my left hand and right hand in such a manner and decided it was time to listen, rather than play. Jonathan, quite an undertaking! Glad you survived it.

I just started working on McCoy Tyner's solo on But Not For Me from Coltrane's "My Favourite Things" album. I'm one chorus in but I haven't done the left hand yet.

Id like to make transcriptions like this in the future, but I am really struggling with transcribing the chord voicings used. How do you come about that? It’d be really helpful. Thank you
@JonTkeys
@JonTkeys 6 ай бұрын
Hello, it helps if you have a little bit of knowledge on who you are transcribing! In this case I knew mccoy used a lot of 4th voicing so it helped finding which ones. Otherwise you can slow it down a lot, use your ears and elimination process and many hours!

@JonTkeys

Thanks! Hard to say but I would say maybe a year with 3 intense months pre recording? The first 80% is fast but the last 20% of the work (details) takes the longest!

To me recording a solo is a learning tool, being satisfied with a full take is a long process and tells me I’ve worked enough on it. I can’t speak for others but maybe they like seeing how the solo looks in action along with the music sheet. I do agree it is one of McCoy’s greatest solo!

Great work!!! If you can transcribe Tyner, and Bill Evans you're the man. When I used to play a bit I preferred working to transcribe Red Garland, and Horace Silver as both are easier for me to hear, and Garland has the most amazing finesse.
