A little gem from John Sayles -- one of the great under-publicized writer/directors of all-time.

A classic scene if there ever was one, from an underrated and largely unknown movie.

I just love how it starts as a wide shot and slowly.....ever so slowly....becomes a close up....it just sells the entire scene how well it's shot....

Still waiting to find out...but lots of the other girls auditioning asked me where my monologue came from, it went down really well. It's such a great scene!

Captures the superficiality and meaninglessness of the main protagonist's former life.

If they had awards for cameo or limited appearance Nancy Mette would have won for this.

Communion, based on the Whitley Streiber book.

Stuff all those 'stage door' films about hard graft leading to a big break leading to glory and fame. For most actors, it leads to exactly this. The AP.

@sksuperior1 Gosh, I never noticed! Funny! 'Least most of 'em are "Passion Fish."

I'd disagree that this has an "Actors Studio" feel. The delivery is kind of self-conscious and stagey. And the use of unbroken monologue doesn't work, here, and makes it seem more unrealistic....because, in my experience anyway, when people talk THAT MUCH in real life, they usually speed it up because they know they're pushing it, socially.

And in real life someone would have interrupted her and started talking about themselves!

And in real life, there’s no Director to yell “action” at you or a script supervisor to monitor your continuity or a gaffer or boom mic operator or make up artist to incessantly touch up your make up
@Circa1628 Жыл бұрын
eh, normal people maybe, but these are actresses. They can deliver clear but well-paced dialogue. Actresses acting as actresses. Why would they stutter or fall over their words?

I know loads of people that would talk this long

In case anyone is wondering , The scene she is referencing is actually in the movie Communion, with Christopher Walken. Oddly, though, it is not Nancy Mette that says the line, because Namcy is not in the film Communion. . The line is delivered by an actress with a higher pitched voice, and with short black hair.

Makes you wonder if Sayles was the script doctor on that film. That's where he makes a lot of his money.

Steven Gwynne Thank you for this.

Steven Gwynne, thank you so much for this little piece of cinematic trivia. I live for these personal, aural history lessons, so to me, it is not trivial - quite the opposite, in fact! It would have made for such a pleasant and enjoyable behind the scenes anecdote, had Irene gotten the part in Passion Fish, but as you (and Kurt Vonnegut ) so eloquently proclaim: "And so it goes..." Thanks again! Made my day.

The irony is that this scene was shot with just the actress on set looking at a piece of tape.

One of my favorite monologues. I did this in theater class. Its a true gem this moment and she is wonderful. I love how the camera slowly pulls in the whole time and how she delivers those 4 colors ... its just a miraculous scene. So glad to find this on here so I can watch it anytime. ❤
