Filmed in a section of Douentza Garden encircled by 12 mock oranges in full bloom, this video is about mock orange (philadelphus) and its use in the garden as either a back story to border planting or a scented hedge. We take a look at four different types of mock orange, discussing the various attributes of each.
Plants in order of video appearance...
Rosa 'Céleste'
Lobelia bridgesii
Philadelphus 'Virginal'
Philadelphus noid X 3

This is my absolute favorite. It’s a childhood memory for me along with catalpa tree and old fashion snowball bush and lilacs. We had them growing in the front yard in the country. The mock orange and catalpa greeted everyone at the driveway. I always knew when 4th of July was about to arrive by the blooms. Love the scents!

I love love the scent of mock orange bushes, I have 7 of them for about 4 years now, but they didn't grow very much, this year is the first year that they are blooming very well, I'm so glad. I will buy a few more to plant in planters and place them very close to the patio door. Thanks for your wonderful garden tour, it is fantastic.

I love a mock orange shrub! I was given one from an old lady in her 80's and she said her bush was a division of her mother's so the bush had family history. My bush would bloom in the month of May and had the most intoxicating sweet perfumery fragrance! What a sweet memory you have brought to me in this video.

@@GardeningatDouentza my son bought a magnolia grandiflora and put it into a half barrel not knowing how big they grow. He's offered it to me to plant but I have only got a small garden and I'm scared of it getting out of hand and too big. I'd absolutely love it, but I darent plant it haha. I bought a philadelphus virginal last year, still in a pot. I wasn't sure if to keep it or not as I'm restricted for space but I think I could keep it pruned

I do love the old garden roses, even though they do get large and leggy, are thornier than hell and most only bloom once a year. But the display they put on when they flower and the powerful aroma of the blooms makes them worth it, IMO. Down here in Florida, most modern roses just can't handle the prolonged heat and humidity but some of the older varieties can. I've got one called Clotilde Soupert, the blooms are not very large but it is a repeat bloomer and the fragrance is quite strong (and it is a rather compact plant).

I have a tall growing Philadelphus double like the third one you showed to us in the video, but I would like to ask how and when do you take cuttings and what part of the cutting is best to take. Also, at what time of the year is best. I pruned the tree one year and just stuck the prunings into the ground and I got three trees out of it but I cannot remember for the life of me at what time I did it and I have been trying to strike some more trees but every attempt has failed I guess I'm either doing it at the wrong time or the wrong part of the tree I do feel that it has to be a woody stem and not a new one I would love it if you could help me, please. I love your garden by the way I think it looks fantastic.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Жыл бұрын
What a great result from your prunings! Mostly it is recommended to propagate philadelphus by softwood cuttings, taken from spring to early summer (Apr-Jun). This method uses flexible young shoot tips from this season's growth. It takes at least 2-3 years before they start to flower.

@@GardeningatDouentza I tried new green shoots last year. I even put hormone-growing powder on them and planted them in compost and well-watered them but every time they would just wilt and eventually the leaves would fall off with no sign of any routing maybe I should use a different compost. I sometimes wonder if it was just that the weather was too hot that year.
