It's not the first time we've dealt with crossovers (and it's definitely not the last...), there's so much to talk about, right? We asked our Acoustician, Alex Newman, to share his insights on passive crossovers.
In this episode:
02:00 - Why do we use passive crossovers?
04:56 - How can you 'hear' a passive crossover?
06:39 - What does a crossover consist of?
08:35 - What is first order?
11:24 - Why do we prefer lower order crossovers?

What a coincidence! I just got back from an authorised dealer of Dynaudio here in Singapore and received a brochure of the new Contour series. I was reading the specs and wondered what 2nd order crossover meant, surprised you guys would answer the very same day with a video. Haha! Anyway, loved videos from Roland Hoffman and Otto Jørgensen. Sometimes searching for answers online through opinions could be damaging if the answers arent from a reliable source. So im really glad you guys are giving out solid and lifechanging advices as we make them practical in our everyday lives. Thanks Christopher for your efforts in increasing our knowledge and awareness to us consumers. Proud owner of Dynaudio Contour 1.3SE & Contour 1.8mk2! 🤗

1st order has the best transient response, the least phase shift and less components. Although its not simple.

I do wonder about the PR (Passive Radiator) vented systems. They tend to get the balance between ported & closed enclosures. And they do sound different. I experienced them to be definitely more clean than the ported and having more depth than the closed enclosures... Best of both worlds ? What are the Dynaudio experts thoughts about PR systems ? Very informative videos btw, just keep doing them. Gr8 job !

Hi! I managed to have a quick chat with Alex about your question. He says: "I would say we have a lot of experience with ported/vented systems and so we're able to get great results faster for passive systems. Our technologies in our driver design are also optimised for ported and sealed enclosure systems, such as our MSP diaphragm. For active systems, closed boxes (as you will find in the Focus 60 XD) allow versatility when using DSP, they also have a better time response at low frequencies compared to vented systems. We often use highly damped ported enclosures for active systems, for example in LYD and new XEO range, as we can achieve similar advantages with added bass extension. Passive Radiators are good for avoiding box resonances being audible, however, we solve this issue by rear loading our ports. Passive radiators can also restrict the size of the enclosure designed as they often need to be larger in surface area than the active woofer, therefore, smaller box designs can be difficult to achieve. There are always trade-offs between different loudspeaker system designs and we usually chose ported boxes." I hope this clears things up a bit, Christopher.

Well, Christopher, I feel totally ignored. HA HA. You only look 2 times into the camera ;-) I can see that you're having a hard time not to look into the camera at the start of the video. Good explanation Alex Newman about Crossover.
