I realize not many people know the name Garry Moore. On " I've Got a Secret " Garry not only smoked but endorsed cigarette commercials on his show. Sometimes it would be Winston cigarettes or other brands. On " Two For The Money" Herb Shriner gave cartons of cigarettes as well as a Shaffer cartridge pen to oncoming contestants. Those who smoked took the cigarettes, those who didn't left them behind, but they liked the cartridge pen.

A bit of trivia about the comment from Allen Ludden about Dorothy Loudon being "the new Carol Burnett". Fourteen years later, Dorothy Loudon won the Tony Award for the musical "Annie", a role that Carol Burnett later did in the movie version. I remember the TV sitcom that Dorothy Loudon had in 1979 called "Dorothy" where she was a teacher at a boarding school for girls. Only four episodes were produced.

@ChrisHansonCanada: Did Dorothy London’s sitcom involve any orphans and her singing “Little Girls” and “East Street”? Gee, wasn’t there a show called “Facts of Life” so Loudon’s show probably seemed a weak copy.

Gary Moore cracks me up, besides smoking a lot, he flicks his ash on the table, over his shoulder and then stomps on it on the floor.

The school teacher would have appreciated that $450. I looked it up and the average pay for an elementary teacher in 1963 was around $5,800. Pretty much close to $60,000 in 2024 dollars, but that extra $450 would still have been nice.
@Ed37373 ай бұрын
5800 is 59,700 in 2024. Not terrible for a job with over two months off in the summer, a week off in the spring, a week off at Christmas, and the chance to be home by 4pm everyday.

Interesting how one of the definitions of "Parole" is indeed "password!" - From Vocabulary.com: "Parole can also mean 'password.' If you're part of an underground revolutionary group, you'll need a parole to help keep your meetings secret. Just say the word at the door, and they'll let you in."

I am guessing that you and several others in this comment section either were not alive in 1963 or lived at the South Pole, but in 1963 cigarettes were the number one advertised product on TV and print ads and billboards and were also on radio ads in the U.S.A..

Gary Moore did rather well. Dorothy Loudon was "asleep-at-the-switch" very often. Somehow, she and a contestant did the lightning round in 20 seconds. That was a very good time. I was telling them "Arrows" for the P-W "Quiver", but they never listen to me. 😒 For the P-W "Recline" a clue could have been "lounge" and/or "chaise". Note to contestants, especially the college student trying to become a teacher: If the clue giver or the other contestant says a word then you can be sure that it is NOT the "Password". 🙄

Celebrities smoked all the time on TV back in the 1950's and 1960's. At the time, probably 70 percent or more of the adult population smoked. It was an accepted habit --- but an annoying one!
