My father and I were sitting in the audience for this; I think it was on Halloween night. The announcer, Jack Clark, did a terrible warm-up; his jokes were awful, and he kept referring to "our mess -- ah, show." They only taped the one episode (it was for prime time), and I got the idea that everybody was going to go out together for a late dinner afterward. After the taping was done, Mr. Ludden took some questions. The only one I remember was "How's Betty?" "You want to see her?" Mr. Ludden asked, and everybody went yeah, so out came Betty White, who of course was his wife. Betty hopped up onto the Password table and waved at everybody with both hands, and we all cheered her.

You have to realize that game show hosts often met the contestants before the show, and that the mini bio on camera was mostly for the benefit of the audience. So he may have already known beforehand she was married. On the other hand, some hosts either didn't know or pretended ignorance of their contestants. Groucho Marx was notorious for making fun of contestants on You Bet Your Life, partly to get laughs at their expense....and partly, I think, because he was bored and it amused him to make other people look stupid. I'm getting sick and tired of people downgrading what Allen Ludden did. All of you obviously never read God's Holy Word the Bible. The real Christian home has the husband working and the wife staying home and taking care of her family. It wasn't the least bit insulting for Allen Ludden to ask the female contestants what their husbands did for a living.

@sashineb.21145 жыл бұрын
I think you're right. Dealing with Desi's infidelities and drinking would have made her tough, plus when she was running the studio in the early 60s, that certainly had its effect. She said once all she wanted to do was acting but she suddenly found herself being an executive, too. I've heard stories about how bossy she could be even with big-name stars, such as Jack Benny, Richard Burton. Certainly different from the lovable Lucy Ricardo, but she did give us so much pleasure and laughter, even though her later shows were not very good.

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Claimed that Christina Crawford's accusations about his first wife Joan Crawford's were false!
@skipeastport55293 жыл бұрын
No that’s not quite what he said. He said that the woman Christina described was not the same as the woman he had been married to. Joan adopted Christina years after she divorced Fairbanks who was remarried to another woman and not in the Crawford home. Other stars who knew Joan after the adoption stated that they had witnessed her abusive behavior. Lana Turner stated after Joan’s death that everyone in Hollywood knew but covered it up because Hollywood protected its own. Basically no one will ever know the truth about what went on in Joan’s life. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

How times have changed. Notice how Allen Ludden does not ask the women contestants what they do; he asks what do their husbands do. That is just proof that women were not considered to have lives of their own outside of their husband and their children.
@faithfulforever63314 жыл бұрын
@Digging for Apples This just proves that no matter how much the times can change, people are much less apt to do the same. I honestly think discrimination and prejudice is much worse now than when I was young. And I don't just mean prejudice against race, which is horrific. I also mean prejudice against religion, age (too young or too old), ethnic ancestry, first language spoken, level of education or lack thereof, what part of the country or world that you came from, financial status, sexual orientation, and even against a person's sex itself (male or female). I have even seen discrimination and prejudice against people who don't have an easily pronounced Anglo-Saxon surname. At least 50 years ago when a person was prejudice, they were open about it. You knew exactly where you stood with them. Now people are much more prejudiced, but they are also much more skilled at hiding or disguising that prejudice. It is more insidious and evil than it has ever been.
