Maureen O'Shea is a delight - secretary for an ad agency, writes copy and sings? She could have been a character on "Mad Men". Too bad she didn't make it in show biz; then she could have been brought back as a celebrity guest... A 1967 listing in the Detroit Free Press lists her as singing in a Roaring '20s revue at the Killarney Castle in Windsor, Ontario, so she stuck with it for a while at least.

It's so absolutely wild to know that at this time although I think Johnny Carson was very well respected and loved by many people, I don't think he was quite known as a LEGEND as of yet (as he was in later years probably hitting the early 1970s onward).

Johnny Carson was very familiar with CBS. He had his own prime-time comedy sketch TV show, "The Johnny Carson Show", on CBS during the 1955-56 season. Although the show got good reviews by TV critics, it failed to develop an audience, and was cancelled after one season. Johnny Carson made frequent appearances on CBS' panel shows, like "What's My Line?" and "To Tell The Truth". A couple of years later, ABC hired him to be the host of the daytime game show, "Who Do You Trust?" Carson did a lot of comedic stunts and sight gags for the show, which proved to be good training for him when he was hired by NBC to become the new host of "The Tonight Show" several months after this episode of "Password" was videotaped.

@@voicetube I grew up watching Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show" in the 1970s to the early-1990s. I learned about Carson's early TV work from research on the Internet, specifically Wikipedia. I bought a DVD several years ago, that features about a half-dozen surviving kinescopes of "The Johnny Carson Show", which includes the very first on-camera appearance of James Arness, in costume, to promote his upcoming new CBS TV series, "Gunsmoke". Unfortunately, there are very few episodes of "Who Do You Trust?" that still exist. I believe that there is one early episode from 1958 or 1959 that is available for viewing here on KZbin.

See comments below. This episode was in 1962 and Pat Carroll lived to be 95 years old passing away July 31, 2022. Her most memorable role, however, came in 1989, when she voiced the sea witch Ursula in the Disney feature The Little Mermaid. Pat Carroll Says Her Piece: “No, she is not an octopus. She is a squid.” “She has six tentacles instead of eight,” The Emmy and Grammy award winner finished, sassily adding that this choice was made because fewer tentacles “[made the character] less expensive to draw.”

I'm almost through watching the entire "What's My Line" collection of videos (sob), and have just started in on these and To Tell the Truth. Pretty entertaining, and fun to play along at home. I'm hoping to get better with time at thinking up clues. Sometimes, as with "chum" there just doesn't seem to be a better word. "Crony" maybe. I'm kind of embarrassed at the way the non-celebrity guests grab at the celebrities when they've guessed a word. I understand the impulse, but it's sooooo awkward! I don't understand the word "dead" as a clue for "joint." Can anyone explain it?

I don't mind. Celebs should not be untouchable. Nancy Sinatra was very composed and did not touch or be touched. I think people just get very excited when they win. Its a natural response.

KIM - Yes! I love What's My Line, but how can you have passed throught the 1000s of entries! With Password, I plug in for the celebrity, but get caught up in the mesmerizing game! Hypnotic. The thing that must strike everyone is the good manners, charm and social graces of a time that's past.

They were just excited, and back then, the stars wouldn't think twice about it because they knew that was as far as it would have gone..far fewer psychos roaming the streets with poor mental health back then..and far less stalking celebs.

This was from "Password" first year on "prime-time" network television. The show debuted on daytime TV on CBS a year earlier. Very few episodes of the daytime version of "Password" exist, either in the 1960s or even the early-1970s on ABC. All of the NBC episodes were taped and preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Pat Carroll was popular in those days as a second banana along with Sid Melton on the Danny Thomas Show. Her co star Marjorie Lord also lived well into their nineties . If JC had eased up on those cigarettes and alcohol he may have lived into his nineties like his brother and sister did .
