When Joan loses it, and Johnny plays off of that, it's pure comedic genius. Tears of laughter. Joan was so adorable. I miss her so much.

I agree. I think they had a fall out because Johnny was hurt!! You cd tell everytime he had her on the show , he was proud!! I think Johnny adored her. When the contract was done without his knowledge, he was devastated. It wasn't about money! I think someone got to him first and when. She called Johnny that night thinking she was telling him first, someone had already told him and made it ugly

@@patriciabowman8822 they weren’t friends in real life, friendly yes but when the show went to commercial Joan would say the same thing every time “Band sounds great right?” And he replies “Yep” and that’s the extent of their conversation, but when the camera came back on he was on. It was totally fake and even outside of work they didn’t talk. Joan sent Melissa to Johnny once as a joke, how can I repay you for my career? Here is my first born child raise her Jewish. And Johnny and the show we’re paying Joan horrible amounts of money to guest host, piss on money Joan even said once.

@@Nicolebeverlyhills absolutely and Johnny was unwilling to step aside to let her take over from him at any point. She was there for 20 years and everyone else left except her. She left when it was revealed that the list of his replacements didn't have her on it. She was treated terribly.

I'll always be grateful to Johnny Carson for 'discovering' the incredible Joan Rivers. He's so right when talking about how incredible her stand-up routines were - rapid-fire, brilliant jokes. The woman was the platinum standard and no one can ever touch her level of brilliance. She looks absolutely beautiful in this interview and her nonstop, hilarious jokes show how smart and "on" she always was. RIP, great lady.

Mellisa showed pictures of Joan's cabinet that held THOUSANDS of jokes on index cards labeled by theme. So before a show she reviewed her material that she collected over the decades. So was it rehearsed ? NO. She was Prepared. IMO the fact that she catalogued her jokes is a reason why she lasted so long as a comedian because she had a GREAT Work ethic IMO

It hurt....America actually when they stopped talking over the absolute stupidest of things. There was no more Joan and Johnny of this caliber anymore. And it was missed dearly. She went to his memorial place where he was, and it grieved her immensely. She cried and was I think genuinely very heart broken. Even in strokes of meanness, she always said "And he looked at me right there, and said you are going to be a star. Changed my whole life" I miss these two together greatly. And thanks Jimmy for letting her back on the last year she was with us. You could so tell it meant the entire world to her.

@@craigg5410 Probably almost all of the material was prepared. There's no way she came up with all those zingers completely on the spot. When she cracks herself up before finishing a joke, she's obviously telling a pre-written joke. She seems to set up certain jokes by leading the conversation in a certain way. I imagine that she already knew the possible topics that Johnny might discuss. Probably a few things are improvised. It takes a lot of talent and experience to have that fast command of your material in a conversational format. Now that I think about it, she wasn't just a great comic, she was a great conversationalist. I get the impression she had enough crazy things stored in her head to keep a dinner party entertained for hours.

I always thought a pairing of them together would have been awesome. As I Tonight Show guest host She had Rickles on and it was great interview They were friends and had much respect for each other. To me , that was nice to hear as I have admired both of them. Very quick witted on top of their game and kept it coming A little crossover in delivery some similarities but they each had a unique subject matter / Style I’ll give Joan the edge as the better one as she covered more ground subject matter Her style evolved and kept current with the trends and times with her material At the end she was still as reverent as the day she came into show business Letterman noted that in his eulogy on her. Her energy level and material was current and sharp Can’t say that about anybody in that business to have been able to pull that off RIP to Rivers and Rickles

She actually said that in an interview from like 2016. Before the show offers, she was his project, like he gave her a chance. But then she became competition and that's business and he was insecure and petty like everyone who wants to be famous and he destroyed her career. Why he had so much power was because of the lack of competition. There were like four channels for the bulk of his career lol

You'd be surprised what was sensored back ìn the day. Until the 70's the only curse words allowed on TV were 'hell' and 'damn or damnation' and that was because they were slightly biblical. In 71 I think Archie Bunker said " Goddamn" for the 1st time and the same year a lady on the soap Love of Life called her son a "Bastard". Both incidents shocked the country and had the media yapping for months about the "filth" on television.

The Fashion Police with her daughter Melissa, and some nameless others, was the last thing I remember her doing. With Joan it was a hilarious time. Jiuliana Rancic was OK to. Love Joan.

Thanks Joan, haven't laughed that hard in a long time. The sad thing is, she would have been cancelled in this day and age.

To think that some years later, Joan Rivers went to another network (Fox) which Johnny perceived as a snub and he never spoke to her again, is a sad thing.
