When she cracks herself up before finishing a joke, she's obviously telling a pre-written joke. She seems to set up certain jokes by leading the conversation in a certain way. I imagine that she already knew the possible topics that Johnny might discuss. Probably a few things are improvised. It takes a lot of talent and experience to have that fast command of your material in a conversational format. Very quick witted on top of their game and kept it coming A little crossover in delivery some similarities but they each had a unique subject matter / Style I’ll give Joan the edge as the better one as she covered more ground subject matter Her style evolved and kept current with the trends and times with her material At the end she was still as reverent as the day she came into show business Letterman noted that in his eulogy on her. In 71 I think Archie Bunker said " Goddamn" for the 1st time and the same year a lady on the soap Love of Life called her son a "Bastard". Both incidents shocked the country and had the media yapping for months about the "filth" on television.
