Omg. I’ve been speaking English my whole life as a first language - 18 years - and this video taught me that began and begun are not the same. I would say “the movie had began already”. Also, drank vs drunk. I bet that’s the case with those. This is crazy to me that I never knew that.
@EiwaGreen-kc2wu5 ай бұрын
I still don't understand difference, between movie has began or begun
@bruce23574 ай бұрын
@@EiwaGreen-kc2wu The difference is that began is not the past participle, which means you don't use has, have or had with it. Has began is completely wrong all the time. It has begun, I have begun, I had begun, it's just that simple.

It’s so interesting that when you grow up speaking English you can know the word to use, even if you don’t know much about the exact details of that word. I’m trying to learn better grammar, so I needed to learn about past participles. I knew by instinct when to use “began” and “begun”, but I didn’t know why that was ingrained knowledge or the specific rules about when to use each.

Thank you! Like many other early/heavy readers out there, my grasp of english has always been instinctual. People tell me I write well, but I would never be able to proofread my own work, nor even say "I wrote this sentence this way because _____", beyond "because it sounded right in my head." This immediately clarified the concept and the examples were such a help. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks for the great explanation But sometimes I'm not sure which form should I use, past perfect or past participle. Are there any solid rules to distinguish the usage of past perfect and past participle?
@kelixrblx77623 жыл бұрын
that's the question i wanna know the answer too
@geoffreymacneill23293 жыл бұрын
Your question isn't exactly correct. The past perfect will always use the past participle. For example, please see the following sentence - I had walked all day yesterday. The auxiliary verb 'to have', is in the past tense 'had', and the main verb 'walk' is also in the past tense or you could also say it's in the past participle form. The past participle is different from the past tense ONLY in regards to irregular verbs, as explained in the video above. For instance, the verb to 'write' is an irregular verb... I 'wrote' is the past tense of 'write', but if you have an auxiliary verb to go with it - as is needed for the past perfect tense - then the past participle becomes different than the past tense... you would say ''I had 'written'' ... you wouldn't say ''I had wrote'', that's bad English. So in summary, the past perfect will always use the past participle. I hope that makes sense.

@@geoffreymacneill2329 When would you use "I had walked all day yesterday." versus "I walked all day yesterday."? "I sent you an email" versus "I have sent you an email". "I slept well" versus "I have slept well". Is the nuance different? I doubt myself as a native sometimes.
