In addition to their skills and sympathy, always to be admired is the temperament of these Italian grandmothers who, even at their age, have a temperament like a young girl (maybe even more !). 😊💕

My great-aunts were like this in their mid 90s. Once I asked my favorite, Arduina, which changes she'd seen that she liked the most. I expected her to say cars or planes or tv, but instead she said it was being able to throw away her black kerchief and clothes and go and get her hair done once a week, even if her husband didn't like it! That vibrancy, humor, wit, love of life are qualities so many of these women of a certain age share, and yet they had such incredibly hard lives, and experienced such tragedy, sorrow, war, even hunger and disease without benefit of modern medicines. I can't explain it, but I know we'll lose people who are irreplaceable when they're gone.

Little Ilara reminds me of myself at her age, I used to watch my mother make homemade pasta, watching every detail as my mom rolled out the pasta sheets, on the wooden board my father made for her.I’d take a piece and eat it raw too 😂 We look alike too. Goosebumps and bittersweet watching this. ❤ My mother Giuseppina, would have been 89 last month ❤

That's a good sized platter of pasta. There's something joyful about seeing a mound like that coming out to the table. It may be simple but I'll bet its tasty & leaves everyone replete. I was having a chortle when she was talking about what she inherited from her mother-in-law one minute, then giving her daughter-in law a hard time the next. Yet I imagine she'll leave her utensils with love to her one day. Great video thanks, & that field of sunflowers cheered me up on this cold & frosty morning [with snow forecast too I might add].

Your videos are always so heartwarming! Lovely Maria and her sweet grandchildren were so endearing; family, and its history, at its best. An aside, I inherited a "slim" cook's knife from my mother that is probably 80 years old and now more resembles a long boning knife. It handled age much the same as Maria's from all the honing by my father!

Aw, I would adopt that 'ugly' knife, it's doing at least as well as its owner for their age...very curious about the preferential use of duck egg in this pasta when she has chickens (and guinea fowl!) available, it must be for something other than bulk. Breaking up rather than stretching the gluten in the pasta to release tension in the dough is some lovely 'kitchen science' too. I hope her rich postwar husband didn't treat his teenage bride too badly, that 'it was a different time' says a lot.

I'm sure the children get some of the wine. I grew up on "baptized wine", a finger or two of wine topped up by bottled water. Of course, home made wine is about 3% alcohol and that little has virtually none. I always tell people it does no harm. Italy has one of the lowest if not the lowest alcoholism rates in Europe. I never saw young people drunk growing up, or, God forbid, a woman. Men might get a little "happy" at family parties, but nothing like I see here. In all my life I don't think I ever saw my father or any of his 6 brothers actually drunk. As for the tagliatelle, just how we make them, except we chop up the "odori", the onion, carrot, and celery, and we don't put in basil, and perhaps 1 whole garlic clove which is then removed.

yes my great-grandmother would put a biscott in a small glass, fill with wine and let the biscott soak it up before giving it to us kids. She said it would make our blood strong (and softened the cookie a little so we didn't break a baby tooth!)

I noticed that in my own family and even more so when I started traveling to Italy to visit my relatives. Drunkenness is really frowned upon and wine is considered to be another form of nourishment. Because it's not this forbidding adult thing, it doesn't have the cultural allure that it does here.
