In real life you can see the Jackson blender not removing much pastel. But moving it a bit. I would only use it if I wanted to blend tiny bits. I too still prefer the paper stumps. The silicone colour shapers I won't ever use on pastelmat. The hard tool does not take the surface off the pastelmat no matter how hard I pressed. 😉👌👍

I love your tutorials and I especially like that you share "mundane" details on subjects like paper and various tools. Things that can mean the difference between frustration (and quitting) and satisfaction (and continuing). I am subscribing.

I found that the rubber blenders are great for blending in the details without softening and getting a more refined edge and don’t want it to blend into the other colors harshly.

Superb....So useful...I had seen colin Bradley trying pastelmat with colour shaper and he was indeed not happy.but as you know he uses colour shaper religiously on ingress paper. Thanks for this differentiation🙏

I was going to say the same as Sheila about the Jackson's shaper tool, the harder rubber pastel blender seems to be very harsh on whatever it's rubbing over, to the extent of removing pastel or even the top layer of surface of the pastel paper as you demonstrated. I have a small selection of colour shapers I have used them with small areas in graphite drawings to blend or lighten though I still prefer my paper stumps but I also used the fine point or sharp edged colour shaper to apply masking fluid for watercolour painting. The tip is made of silicone as far as I was aware and it cleans off easily without wasting my paint brushes.

Thanks for the comparison. I was just researching Colour shapers. Good to know they are not useful on Pastelmat. There are also much cheaper alternatives on Amazon intended for clay shaping. not sure how they compare to real color shapers.

Thank you for another informative video, Jason. :) I always appreciate them. My thoughts on the Jackson's hard(er) rubber tool are that it seems to be removing the pastels more than blending them. If I look at just about the 7 minute time on your video, the sample on the far right (which is the one you used the Jackson's tool on) seems to have a gap between the colors. Am I seeing it incorrectly? Both the paper blenders did a beautiful job, which is great since I have lots of them ( :D ) The softer rubber one is one I have but it was sold to me as a 'correction' tool when you want to pull a small bit of paint from an area where you may have misplaced it. (I never wind up using mine, as they are like new. I can't even remember why I got them, but they are very similar to what you showed, with a knife-type soft rubber edge). These are just my observations from your demo. Please let me know if I am perhaps seeing the fourth example incorrectly. Thanks again! :)

Defenetly I prefer the paper stumps, because it's really blending and mix it if you need it. And of course! Soft tools and my fingers 😁 thank you Jason, I just thinking buy one of those, but, now, I don't think so!

I love fingers-they are best tool and CHEAP!!! Also-of course I use the paper stumps-and cotton buds. BUT-no cotton buds on sanded paper unless you want a "fuzzy" effect-the sanded paper will "eat" the cotton off the bud! LOL!

Thanks so much for all the useful info you share! Question, if you don't mind, how do I sharpen my Derwent rice paper stumps? I tried my blade but it didn't do a great job... Maybe the blade needs replacing? How do you sharpen yours? Thanks in advance 👍

When i color an object with oil pastel and then fill in the background, i am unable to distinct the object from rest of the colors. The outline of all the objects smudged or blends with the other objects. Colors get mixed up... i use soft blending stamp...
