Located in Imakumano, Higashiyama Ward, Japan's only manufacturer specializing in pastels, Oukan Kagaku Kogyosho. DAISUKE YAMATO, the 4th generation craftsman, is the protagonist of this story.
Since its founding in 1919, it has continued to make pastels using almost the same method. Chiyoji Yazaki, a Western-style painter who traveled around the world, was deeply involved in the development of this product.
YAZAKI asked the founder of the company, saying that it was impossible to draw Japanese landscapes with pastels made by overseas manufacturers.
In this way, the first domestically produced soft pastel "Gondola Pastel" was born, with a rich variety of greens depicting mountains and reds depicting shrines and autumn leaves.
The size is also as small as about 2 cm so that it is convenient to carry.
At the time of its founding, there were about 100 colors, and now it has increased to 242 colors.
They require a large number of colors because they cannot be mixed on a palette like oils and watercolors.
Pastel that can express vivid colors just like pigments.
YAMATO developed a new product in 2011 to spread its appeal. "Kyoto color pastel" that expresses the traditions and four seasons of Kyoto in 18 colors. The names of the colors are also unique, such as “Hozugawa soda,” “Koto no Kaori,” and “Sennen Murasaki.”
It is based on the idea of a high school girl who won the first prize at the Kyoto Culture Venture Competition.
We will explore the work and thoughts of pastel craftsmen who create the colors of Japan and Kyoto.
