I have started painting with pastels and reached a level I didn't think I was capable of. Your videos have been absolutely crucial for this. I've made beautiful portraits of, for example, JR Ewing and Steven Gerrard. Thank you!

This is something I’ve always wanted to learn to do and I am glad I ran across your channel. I don’t have all the colors that you have in the different brands, but I do have carbos so definitely going to attempt your nose is your eyes that kind of thing and then go into a full portrait thank you so much for your tutorials. They are awesome, and hello from Washington state

Carbothello's are great to start with Milan. pastels are great to work with. Best to start with small areas then once you gain in confidence go for a full portrait. Thanks for your kind words, Hello from Nottinghamshire UK 🙏😊

Hello Dave, i really love your videos and your portraits are magnificent! However it would be really nice if you could show a chart of colour mixtures before you start and be more specific of which pencils you have in your hand. Thank you! 🙏

What a treat! Thank you for this. In your practice, have you ever incorporated the more ‘buttery’ pastels? Perhaps when working in larger formats? I’m soooo curious. Thanks once more.

You are welcome Rich, I was wondering what other stick brands would create, I have always just used Rembrandt. thanks for the suggestion. All the very best. 😊🙏

The sticks should be a bit brighter ? So give more light, but comparing to the pencils they are identical .
@DavePortersArt4 ай бұрын
The sticks are really intense when first applied, I de-saturate them with the complimentary colour, this makes the skin tone look more natural. Thanks for watching Patrick. 😊🙏

Have you tried different papers like pastel mat or canson velvet? Is it suitable for portraits?
@DavePortersArt4 ай бұрын
My favourite is Pastel mat... board version, all my tutorial videos are on this surface. I have heard some great reports regarding The Canson Velvet, it comes in large rolls to which sounds great, and does curl up on the edges too. Thanks for watching my video, much appreciated. 🙏😊

Hi dear Dave. I'm one of your students which have learned a lot from your shared techniques; thank you very much for that. I have a question regarding sanded boards, specially Pastelmat, as it or other brands of sanded papers are not found in our locality; . Actually, I've tried hard to make pastel boards like Pastelmat, or at least similar to it. I have read a lot of articles and watched all KZbin videos on making pastel boards. In addition to testing several ready-made pastel grounds, I have made a variety of compositions of binder and grit with various degrees of roughness to cover the surface to make it a perfect pastel board. My main problem is that I have no experience with Pastelmat or any other sanded papers even just once, so I'm not able to do a good judgment. I think my boards don't grab the pigments as Pastelmat does, based on what I have read about its features or seen in your videos. I have watched your videos thoroughly and noticed that when you rub the surface with you finger, it doesn't remove the pigments off of the surface compared to when I do the same on my own boards. I don't know how much pressure you apply with your finger, therefore I'm not able to judge my hand-crafted boards. I have no problem regarding the number of accepted layers of pastels because my boards are very good at it. The first few layers of pigments stick very well, like what I've seen in your work. But as more layers are added, I feel the pigments slide or move more freely than they should, in a way that the subtle details added in the final stage are not so stable and may be ruined with a simple smudge. Is this true about Pastelmat or not? How much stable are the subtle details you add in the final stage? Also, I want to know what will happen to a non-framed artwork? Does the air flow remove the pastel pigments gradually off of the board or not? Do you frame the finished artworks or they are so stable and will last long without frame? I am eager to hear from you about the behavior of Pastelmat regarding this matter. I appreciate again for your shared techniques and tips. Take care and be well.

I am allergic to dust, so Pastel mat is a god send... there is another paper just come on the market... Canson Mi-Teintes Velvet. You can find KZbin videos about this new paper. I actually use the board version of pastel mat. it is so magic to work on... makes all the difference. I wrap my work in glassine paper if storing them or frame them under mount and glass. Thanks for watching my videos all the very best with your pastel journey. 🙏😊
