They didn’t write the TV theme, the theme music was written by Michael Skloff and the show’s lyrics by David Crane, Marta Kaufman, and Allee Willis. The band was hired to perform it. In order to include the song on their 1995 album, the version on the album has extra verses written by Danny and Phil, but because the extra verses are not part of the show’s version, the monies paid to the band are a very small portion of what the song makes. When they appeared on Good Morning America about a decade ago, Phil mentioned the song had generated over $400 million in royalties of which they had gotten about $20 million as performers.
