I haven't gotten to that part of the concert yet so this might be way off base (maybe you knew this existed, and it's just this particular performance that you wanted), but John did cover The Sign in 1995 for "Songs For Peter Hughes." I got to see him play it about 2 years ago in Atlanta. He said he would play it but made the audience promise they wouldn't record it. His reasoning was that he realized that not all song characters can be morally upright peolle because that would be bullshit and not realistic. But still condemned what the song was about. The things he does for Georgia.

Listening to the music loosely while I heard House Guest something seemed strange about it, so I listened again. The first thing is the narrator is the woman's husband. Once you realize it, it hits like a ton of ***ing bricks. She's cheating on him, and he goes from being the best husband in the world... to a house guest. "Place my palms against your throat" at first gave me an impression he was choking her over the cheating - but as this event seems to pass with her still alive later. One can put their PALMS, keyword, PALMS, not HANDS, in a position where they'd be at someone's throat - it's a kissing embrace. In-between there's "her waning graciousness" which is... a metaphor for the cheating? She wants him out of her life? The way "Ease your thumb off the remote" is placed is strange. Is it a command? (she) eases (her) thumb off the remote makes language sense? She just generally looses her grip on the remote as nothing is on, and things are actually becoming "romantic" with nothing else to do? If he's asking her to do these things in his imagination, maybe he's asking her to help her commit his violence. It depends on where you think the palms are placed and where the thumb might be - palms against the sides, with thumbs on the same side, or palms in the middle, with thumbs crossing over to grip. In this video John puts his hand on the guests side - the kissing embrace, and he uses softer tones. The rest of it... turns into a blur. I don't get what he does in her room she'd be ashamed to accuse him of? Finding the journal makes sense. "you were looking for proof about me cheating!" is self-incriminating... and one thing, unless we count all the places he looked... but these lyrics seem too intense and direct for that. Sex between them? I don't really get how she'd be ashamed to accuse him of it - especially with the following 'because she refused to love him'... He utterly destroyed things? The lyrics I feel don't imply that level of aggression, ironic compared to the "gentleness" of just finding the journal. "Reject my love" and "You refuse, I accuse" feels obvious, though "you refuse" could be she rejected the cheating, or more poetically, and more likely I feel in Mountain Goats style, she refused his exclamations that she didn't love him - so he accuses her of cheating. "Yes I'll leave everything the way I found it"... Much of the lyrics were about him not making a mess - which can be seen as there not being evidence he lived there. I'd be interested in any theories behind the song. A search shows this absolute beast of a song never got the attention it deserves.
