This is an old song, but not a spiritual, not by or about slaves. It's an Appalachian Mountain folksong composed and first recorded in 1913. It's been recorded many times over the century, most memorably by Bob Dylan in the 1960s and the Soggy Bottom Boys in the Clooney movie in the 80s. Home Free simply made it new all over again. Home Free is incredible.

Dick Burnett "Man of Constant Sorrow" (also known as "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow") is a traditional American folk song first recorded by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. The song was originally recorded by Burnett as "Farewell Song" printed in a Richard Burnett songbook, about 1913.

Old bluegrass song. So well done by the boys. Home Free has talent in spades. Yeah I wasn’t a country fan but I’m loving their versions of it. Try What We Ain’t Got, Die a Happy Man to hear more good country. HF really sings all genres of music. Tim, the bass, loves doo wop and put out an album of all doo wop songs (50’s & 60’s). They have lots of originals too. Good reactions and hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! 😍😃

Though published in 1913 by Dick Burnett (who did not compose it) this song is an old American Folk Song. It was old when published - he just put it to paper - which then enabled him to earn from its use. Prior to that it was learned "by ear" having originated in & around Kentucky, Tennessee and thereabouts.

Cheating here....borrowed this summary from another commenter.... (I love seeing folks new to HF...and, BP, it's rather obvious you enjoy the same thing!) The group started in 2001 by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp They won The Sing Off season 4 2013 that's where they became very popular. They are the only country A Capella ( all vocals no instruments)group but they are honestly do so so much more than just country music they can sing any genre and they do. There is no Lead singer in the group. They each ( except Adam )sing the song and who’s ever voice or voices sound right for the song gets the lead unless is a bass/ baritone song then that’s Tim or Chance. A lot of time they each have a part in the song. Fans of Home Free are known as Home Fries and are very loyal to the guys. Adam Rupp: Beatboxer Extraordinaire ( 41) can make any sound imaginable (A whole drum kit, harmonica (his Nomonica we call it )plane flyovers, trains, castanets, bugs ,birds etc).Co founder from Mankato Minnesota. Rob Lundquist :Lead tenor(beard and glasses) ( 40 )very soulful voice and master whistler from Minneapolis, Minnesota Tim Foust :Bass (had long dark hair now short with grey ) ( 42 ) 5+ octave range can go so low he blows speakers or sky high from Nederland, Texas Austin Brown: High Tenor ( Long wavy hair )( 37 ) voice of an angel from Tifton Georgia. Adam Chance(Aka Chance):Baritone/Bass ( 39 ) deep, rich voice(Does the juice harp sound in Man Of Constant Sorrow) has short dark hair short beard from Baldwin County, Alabama. Replaced Chris Rupp ( Adams Brother and co founder in 2016) They have collaborated with many singers and legends Don McLean:American Pie Oak Ridge Boys:Elvira Kenny Rodgers:Children Go Where I Send Thee (Please watch the end message) Billy Gilman:One Voice Alabama:Christmas In Dixie Mark Wills:Don’t Laugh At Me ( important message at the end ) Lee Greenwood & US Airforce Band:God Bless The USA Any many more. They have 3 amazing songwriters in the group Tim,Austin and Chance So they have a very large playlist of covers and original songs End of the Road (Boyz 2 Men cover ) When A Loves A Woman Helplessly Hoping (5 part harmony masterpiece ) Unchained Melody Butts Medley/ Remix Listen To The Music Can’t Outrun You Brothers In Arms Stargazer Trilogy( All Originals written by Austin) Give Me A Sign ( Chapter 1) Stargazer Lilies( Chapter 2) MR (Chapter 3) Skull And Bones ( original written by Chance for Ubisoft new video game Skull And Bones) Might As Well Be Me ( Original) Playing With Fire ( Original) Remember My Name (Original) Oh Pretty Woman Life Is A Highway Stand By Me Cruise I Want Crazy Christmas In LA ( Newest Release Mayday(DON’T WATCH TILL YOU ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE GROUP AND THEIR RANGES ) There's not a song that you pick from their 200+ catalog that is bad I haven't found one yet. They are just funny, down to earth, humble really nice guys. They are the best A Cappella group there is IMO Sorry for the long read

Ain't no rivalry between Home Free, VoicePlay, and Pentatonix. The groups have worked together making videos many times whether is one member of a group singing with one of the others or arranging the song for the other group. Country has its roots in Africa. The Africans on the plantations introduced Spirituals and work songs. Those Spirituals led to Gospel. Work songs to the blues and folk music. I created a pretty cool venn diagram about it when I was teaching my students. In fact, the banjo was created on the plantation and based on the African instrument, the kora. All Western music (blues, country, rock, jazz, pop, r&b, rap...) is rooted in Africa. Interestingly enough, metal is most closely related to European classical music with its chord structures, scales, and embellishments.
