WOW Of All The Eulogies given for President Carter, this one brought tears to my eyes, I felt the love, honor , respect this man had for him and even though the family asked that this was not to become a political event, this pastor through his speech made it a political message with class, sentiment and a call for love peace but most of all for those about to be the new leaders of our Country to choose Country Over Self. I truly hope the Republicans, not only were listening but heard what he said. I feel in my heart President Jimmy Carter, heard and is saying, my living was not in vain. Pastor Lowen you touched me. I had to fight back the tears as you spoke. I hope those in charge now will take up the charge and Put Country First. Amen

President Carter didn't sell Panama canal for $1.00, that was a symbolic gesture. He returned the canal to the country that owns it.

Also, the treaty Carter signed that returned it gave the US a lot of power over it - power to defend it, power to ensure international neutrality of its use and the power of first refusal to build a new canal or expand it. So basically all the perks of ownership with no maintenance and operations costs until 1999 when it was fully returned to Panama.
