Adora Penfold yes it is so sad that GSDs have their lives shortened by hind leg paralysis.
@Jenny-kt2xj4 жыл бұрын
The dog in this video is not as extreme as previous GSDs seen at Crufts, so it's a step in the right direction. The dog still has a roach back, and there is a problem with frog-legged GSDs. However the showing "pose" can be misleading, as the hindquarters are placed far back, making the dog's back appear even more sloped. Posing a dog without a roach back in this position will also cause it to appear to have a sloped back. Edit: The dog in the above video also has cow hocks, so not great

What the hell is wrong with breeders breeding that sloped back into the German shepherd
@essynthtempest33264 жыл бұрын
Marli Harper I completely agree, I’ve been raised with German Shepherds and I hated seeing one with a sloped back.
@incognitomode26164 жыл бұрын
As a nitpick, the slope isn’t really intentional. The problem with show German Shepherds is that the show ring has become obsessed with excessive angulation in the rear. GSDs are a tending breed. They herd by circling the flock and acting as a living fence. This herding style is helped by extra rear angulation, causing a very slight slope and leading to a more efficient gait. However, American show lines have gone off the deep end in this regard. They’ve basically been breeding for exaggerated structure for decades. Nowadays breeders are trying to undo the damage, but it will take time. You cannot undo decades of bad breeding in a week or even a year. It takes many generations of dogs to fix things. Until things are fixed, the German Shepherds you see in the ring will probably look wonky. They will draw in cries of “poor slope backed cripples” as the change is gradual.

@wendyrowland77874 жыл бұрын
Aida Hehir but they are not working now are they? In any case this is nonsense, a herding dog that can’t shift itself is not much good. A dog needs it’s tail to balance on sharp turns and to express itself. How on earth do Border Collies manage with tails? Americans are too fond of chopping bits off dogs, illegal in the UK on welfare grounds.

@wendyrowland77874 жыл бұрын
Hannie Ziegel There is a difference between docking and amputation. I don’t agree with either, but in a working environment a short tail may be good for the dog. At least it can still express itself. The Rough Collie has to be one of the least popular of the Pastoral group despite the breed known famously as the Lassie dog. A well known breed but certainly not a popular and common one, wouldn't say rare but certainly not popular like some of the well known breeds. I have a Rough Collie and I have to say they are hard to maintain because of their long hair, and the one I have the hair is like velcro and any small branch of twig/thorns that rubs against the coat can stick to their hair. Not a breed for those who want low maintenance grooming and don't want the living room carpet full of moulting hair, which is probably why they aren't popular.
@Sandy335694 жыл бұрын
Surprised the largest entry was Border Collies. Are they just popular show dogs there?? Because that isn’t the case in the US. Many many people (at least here) don’t agree that they should have ever been accepted by the AKC and turned into a show dog. Plenty of people who refuse to acknowledge the dogs bred as anything but working/herding dogs as a Border Collie. They’re not popular show dogs in the US at all. Figured it was the same within/nearer to their home countries, at least.

Lilia not having a go at anyone so don’t take it the wrong way but the breed has been completely changed in America compared to what it is in the uk and Australia. You guys have really gone away from some of the essentials, the main being moderate.but also I would say things like the working style being shown and pricked ears being accepted etc. which is something that has just been introduced in Australia to spite so many breeders speaking against it. But I think those kinds of things have probably made them not as competitive there compared to other breeds which could be why they seem not as popular. I’ve definitely seen a few nice borders in the states but they probably don’t get the same recognition that they would here or in the UK just because of that change of breed standard?

Georgia Leslie The dogs I see in the show ring in the UK most definitely look very much similar to what’s in the US in the sense that they are NOT what are being used ideally by those who work their Border Collies. It’s not just a US thing, so I don’t really get your point on that.
@Sandy335694 жыл бұрын
Td K The world has changed. People don’t use dogs as much as they used to, so better to at least preserve a breed as long as they are healthy. If they weren’t being bred for show/more so for companionship/or even for sport, the breed could become more endangered (and this goes for a lot of breeds, some of who have nearly gone extinct in recent times).

Most border collie dogs in the united kingdom are not show dogs, they’re either working sheepdogs, pet border collies or border collies that compete in other disciplines. They’re just a popular show dog because they are a very popular breed in general in the U.K. They didn’t become a recognised KC breed until around 1977 which is late compared to many other breeds as many border collie breeders didn’t breed to a ‘breed standard’, they bred for the dogs ability to work. i don’t know much about US border collie lines so i cannot comment

The commenters do not know the breed- to say that the Belgian are all the same dog with different coats is not true. They are all quite different from each other. And saying Alsatians were GSD's is completely wrong- there are NO Alsatians now. It was a Breed on its own. NOT GSD.
@ayayumi61114 жыл бұрын
They ARE considered the same breed by the FCI. They're interbreedable, and share the same standard with the exception of the differing coat types and colors.
@Weirdanimalboy4 жыл бұрын
The Belgian Shepherds are all the same breed, simply with differences in coat color and coat type. That is literally how the entire world views and breeds them, outside from the American Kennel Club in the US.
