I had a brother in Christ do this for me once and it literally set me free of years of guilt. Confession and absolution is not just a Catholic practice. It is a CHRIST directed practice. May you all be blessed in the fullness of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.

Amen padre - pour the forgiveness all over all of us - you to me, me to you, me to others ... our problem in American Christianity is we never say "I forgive you." OHH, yes I have heard "its ok," and "not an issue," and "not a problem" and the MOST telling is "I accept your apology": those are statements of control and NOT forgiveness. Say the words! Often!

Damo G: I am sorry but that is horrible! You cannot scare one into true confession and absolution. It has to be the work of the Holy Spirit through the Word. Your reply was similar to what I heard from several other students in the pre-ministerial program at the S.B.C. university I attend to receive my B.A. in biblical studies. This notion of a "hell-house" scaring one into true repentance. Dir sir, you do not understand the purposes of the Law and Gospel in the Word. I won't get into it here unless you request it, but there are wonderful books addressing such false theology. I respond to you as I did to my fellow Christian classmates in college. Pax.

Jesus says all believers are equal in the sight of God. We are either unsaved sinners or saved sinners. Any believer can speak the absolution to a repentant person.

there is absolutely *ZERO* in the Bible supporting 'confession' to a sinner ('priest') putting himself in God's position to forgive 3rd party sins.

@@tony1685 It was instituted by Jesus Christ when He gave His Apostles the authority to forgive sins by His Holy Spirit in the 20th chapter of John. I'm assuming you're aware the Christian church has never taught that it's the pastor who is the one forgiving, but rather he is announcing the forgiveness of God to the sinner who repents before his Lord? In the Lutheran tradition, when a Christian privately confesses his sins for the sake of comforting his conscious, the pastor says, “Do you believe that my forgiveness is God's forgiveness/that this is not my forgiveness, but the forgiveness of God?” We don't believe the forgiveness is from a third party or a source alternative to the Sovereign Father. We believe Christ established and gave the keys of authority to His church, and Christ works in the world through His church (the body of Christ). His church baptizes, celebrates the Lord's Supper, and announces God's forgiveness of sins. Sorry for the long reply, but I'm a former Messanic who used to misunderstand these practices. Happy Sabbath, friend. May the peace of Christ rule your heart.

But we do not HAVE to "do" anything, right? Christ died for our sins two millennia ago (ONCE and for every one of them) and what justifies us is our FAITH. Confession/Absolution in my mind are two worthy practices of worship....a worship offering to God acknowledging our sin and His atonement but it is WORSHIP. We do nothing to get ANYTHING from God, even a man-made ritual that is so profound and beautiful to partake in. Except for private confession...leave that in Rome. There is no human this side of Heaven worthy to hear my private sins and my confession to God and I am seeing this revived around the LCMS. I prefer Jesus' clear admonition to "go into a quiet place and pray to your Father"....I will be neither the Pharisee beating his chest nor the private confessor seeking some unnecessary form of justification or to "feel good". Not this Lutheran...not even close. My confession is no more needed by Christ than my monetary offering.

In Bible you can find heaps and heaps of verses about confessions and absolution. But the confession per se similar to Catholic theology doesn’t stack up in the Lutheran confession. The reason is very simple, in Lutheran belief you get saved by faith and not works. So it really doesn’t matter how much you sin as long as you got faith, and repentance and good works after confession it means nothing for Lutherans. That’s the real contradiction thing you guys don’t know how to solve I am afraid. And because you trying to stick literally to (your) Bible you contradict yourselves when it comes to confession. Just have faith and you be fine...simple as this...

Not true. We believe that faith without works is dead faith. Catholics however believe in mostly works only which is also dead faith.

Congratulations your false doctrine has found a way to get in between me and my savior, hes the one that forgives my sins. God's word says he is faithful and Justice forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness that he being Christ not another man. once again taking Scripture out of context.

If anyone comes in and asks for forgiveness from the pastor. how does that pastor know that God's gonna forgive them , what if they committed the unpardonable sin what if they Committed the sin onto death. The big issue is only God knows your heart and he knows if you're truly repentant anybody could lie say they're repenting but in their heart not mean it. and no man can decide for that except God himself. you people are very confused and leading people to hell.
