It is worth tying to find some video of Stephane Grappelli playing, just to see his face. Mr. Grappelli ALWAYS played with a sweet smile on his face. When you see his smile and listen to his playing you UNDERSTAND what an expression of PURE JOY and PURE LOVE his playing was and also why it touches people so deeply. It is impossible for me to listen to his playing and now smile from the deepest and best part of my soul.. It is sweet, and sad and beautiful music to love by.. The joy he felt and put into his playing is one of the many reasons why his playing will always be loved and the genius of his playing will transcend time. I feel sad for ANYONE who gives this a thumbs down... They must have a terribly sad life.. His genius is from a time that will never exist again, and we are so luck to be able to hear beautifully restored recordings like this with just a couple of clicks, and for free...

Sadly I never saw Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli play together. But I did see Stephane many times playing the student union bars in London the 1970's. THe first time I saw him live I could not believe just how good he and his band were. And he never stopped smiling,. All talk in the bar stopped and the 100 or so people inside just listened and smiled too. A beautiful man who played beautiful music.

I'm beginning to use these records as drumming backing tracks. So much you can use, so much space and many different rhythms from Django and Stephane alone to work with. Highly recommend if you're a competent jazz drummer! Or even just learning, go for it, see what happens.

My Dad loved jazz. He taped his albums, scratches and pops included, on an Akai reel to reel. He introduced me to Edwards and Grapelli. While working in Germany the early 80's I caught him playing a concert. He walked on stage like an old man marrionet lightly taking steps. Smiling he bowed, lifted his chin, tucked the violin in place, touched bow to strings and it was musical electricity until his last bow and waves to the audience. I still remember that concert at Freiburg in Breisgau.

I'm sure he was from another more advanced planet. My idol for 48 years since finding an obscure album in a Boston discount store in 1970. Imagine this music, but faded a little as if it were in another room, and rain in the background. That sounds like a great evening.

Nope, I wanna see Django's shiny hair, Josef's silly smile, and smell Stephane's bow wax.

Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli !!!

The only negative thing you can say about this is that it must have discouraged thousands of would-be guitarists and violinists - I mean, what IS the point in trying?

This type of music was invented by Venuti and Laing, but Django and Stephane took it to its fruition...

Could someone identify the instruments that are played on this? I really am clueless without visuals. Thx

Normally there is an upright bass, a violin, 2 Selmer style rhythm guitars and Django's Selmer lead guitar. There were also a saxophone and clarinet from time time that you may not hear on this recording, this is my first listen, about halfway through. Have a great evening.

Django once said I can hear music in my head that I know is impossible to play on a guitar. That tells me he could play anything that is possible he hat complete command of his instrument
