Tyler, you got that great machine, you're turning over that soft loose dirt started small areas with that ground dig it up 4 or more itch start putting small or medium gravel under, then top it off dirt so you won't be having muddy mess soaking up like quicksand you had this past winter again. starting early care now making a big difference.🤔 just remember on the West Coast we haven't starting our summer rain yet ! 😮 Monsoon & El nino will be on its 🤫 way just as well till September. Good job like always 👍.

FTR, should have said when you adjust the 3pt arms for more lifting power. The arms are closer to the tractor tires. That make the tractor more stable

Talking about the 3 point lift arms.... hydraulics have always fascinated me with what they can do. I mean, pushing a fluid into a cylinder to move a piston, wow, the amount of pressure required to lift that amount of weight. Hell, I can barely blow bubbles through a straw on an x-large soft drink. I mean, just imagine how much more the front-end loader could lift if the attachment point for the cylinder rod was located closer to the bucket end...i.e. further from the fulcrum. Ok, sorry, just an old(er) man getting lost in thought here.. lol.

Tyler; I would consider the Redmond's treatment a " Soil Conditioning" application that Yields Better nutrition from the Crop, i.e. Grass, for the cattle.

This Redmond SR50 application will be interesting. I haven’t used it, but I do like the trace minerals that it contains. Your environment is so much different than what we experience In Indiana. Things seem to be a lot dryer once you get out of your winter rainy season, and putting any type of salt on my grass would really make me nervous…regardless how little salt is actually in the mix. This will be interesting to see how it works for you, and I do hope it works well for your farm.

Another soil amendment test trial you could consider for an increased microorganism benefits to soil texture and fertility is to look into building a Johnson Su bioreactor, to spread compost tea. Probably the best thing you could do that other ranchers have done with tremendous results!

Curious to see how the wood chips do. I had heard/read that woodchips early in the breakdown process will scavenge and hold nitrogen and hence deprive the crop of it until they break down further. This was in regards to wood-heavy compost for vegetables though, and we are talking about grass, so I'll wait for your results. If no ill-effects, I may try something similar next mud season.

I feed minerals and salt blocks to my animals year round. I then compost the manure, and spread that on my pasture as fertilizer. When I moved here 6 years ago, the ground woukd not support weeds. Now with the yearly addition of the manure, seeds, and endless hours of tilling, seeding, manuring, and irrigating there is life this year. I think you are on the right track. Best of luck

Great content, much appreciated. You might want to look into experimental design before drawing conclusions this fall. How do you plan to objectively measure the benefit vs no change vs harm of different interventions? Care should be taken with introducing more than one intervention variable at a time (aeration depth and soil treatments, the amount of water each pasture receives, etc.) I know this isn't a scientific experiment per se and you will likely make a subjective assessment at the end of the season, but it is easy to draw erroneous conclusions when interventions are potentially confounded.

I think the Redmond will work great! Idk if you'll 'see' the minerals, but for sure they will be available to your cows. Since I've had horses 25 years ago, I know that all soil in the US is deficient in Selenium. We always buy & feed separate minerals to our horses. Hay is always deficient in Selenium and other vital minerals. The Redmond application will benefit greatly. It makes sense they eat less grass because their bodies aren't starved if the minerals💙👍

@@troyb6128 depends on the soil the alfalfa grew in I suppose. Alfalfa irrigated with mineral rich snow melt is a different forage from non irrigated from continuously cropped ground

Most fertilizers and soil conditioners are salts. I think people often don’t understand soil chemistry and how salts and different kinds of salts actually work. Of course too much of anything is not good, but most times you need a salt to counter act another salt for a healthy soil even in organic, sustainable, and regenerative agricultural systems.

The wood chips will tie up nitrogen in the soil unless they are completely composted, and inhibit your grass growth. Several years ago I added horse manure mixed with wood shavings from a stable in to my garden all the plants in my garden really struggled that year. The next year was great after every thing had decomposed.

Meant to ask when you did the winter prep and planting with the different seed for the winter growth and bails. I was wondering if you thought just maybe a small strip thru your other Pastures as well? A small food plot if you will. In the Mid West we do this mostly for quail and other birds. But I can see it being useful to you the the following months if you rotate graze a crossed it. Even though it would not recover for any future cutting, you will get the same advantage of being to graze on it through a season as well as having your bail you feed out the winter. Just curious how you lot did with the new seed.

I’ve used a tine aerator and then I’ve used a drum aerator. In my opinion, the drum aerator was much more durable and actually shattered the ground underneath instead of just poking holes like the tines do. Mine was a RanchWorx. You use it when it’s dry. I’ve seen a huge difference in forage growth.
