Chuck thank you for the videos. Last spring I bought raised and processed 35 meat birds. I also bought 9 pullets at the same time I've raised them and added adult birds to my flock. I now have 25 hens and some other various size and ages. I'm starting to get eggs more regularly now and am so excited. I've housed them in my 35x65 greenhouse this winter this has been an ideal situation the poo in there scratch the ground. I'm excited to see the garden grow this summer. I'm going to build a coop with nesting box's in it with perches to roost on. Then I'm going to use the same poultry netting you use to creat pen. I've loved them. My purpose at first was to have eggs for my family,but with what has been going on over the last year I decided I wanted eggs to to share with friends and people in need. Thank you for your encouragement and your knowledge.

@@SheratonParkFarms I want to build a coop that is stationary. Right now I have about 25 hens I could see myself going as big as 30 what do I need to figure for square footage. I was thinking 10x10 8x12 the just fence a large portion of my back yard with poultry netting and area around 40x60

I watched a video from I think it was a channel called 'chickens in my garden', from New Zealand. She did some experiments about how long it was safe to keep eggs out of the fridge. She tested them for freshness mainly. She was testing eggs at various ages up to a year. The one's that were up to 6 months old were perfectly fine, after that they started to deteriorate. They dried out, got lighter in weight and didn't look as good... but none of them went bad, not even at a year old. I keep my store bought eggs in the fridge, but I just got my own chickens, will be keeping my nesting boxes clean and keeping my own eggs out of the fridge. I can't wait for my girls to start laying, should be another 4 - 6 weeks.

Hello from Virginia. I love chickens too...and love clean eggs. I wasn't locking up the nest boxes at night so great information that I will start doing tonight. I use pine shavings and hay in the boxes, but like the pads so I'm going to give them a try. Thanks for the education.

Glad you are helping clear up the confusion on both sides. I've heard people say there is no benefit to refrigerating the eggs and others believe they must be refrigerated. As you stated, if you keep your chickens, nesting boxes and eggs clean from the get-go and don't wash off the bloom, there is no real "need" for most people to keep them in the fridge, but if you have more than you can use over a couple of weeks, keeping them in the fridge will help them stay fresh longer. We just ordered our first hens the other week. A bit late in the year, so a bit limited selection, but we are excited and we'll be able to order some next spring to fill out the variety we were wanting. About how many hens do you keep in that area? I've been trying to figure out about how often I might need to move our birds ( about 16 starting off in a hundred foot of netting).

I just learned a lot from this video. Very helpful. Hubby says I should raise chickens. I am too afraid to try it. We have Coyote, Fox, Raccoon and a Hawk that live on our property. We have 13 acres (mostly open space) so plenty of room but feel it would be a train wreck. I have seen what a Raccoon can do to a chicken. NOT pretty.

I like your mobile chicken coop. Maybe you can tell us how you made it and what materials you used. I love the idea of moving it every few days to take advantage of insects that are not good for grass production. We have tons of grass hoppers here, too many of them. There are about 120 birds in the eggmobile. I really need a bigger one for next year because we are going to up the size of our flock. The slats are about 1 1/2" apart if memory serves. The nesting pads are already cut to size and we just drop them in the boxes. Only real predator problem we have had has been with hawks and aerial predators. I think them going inside at night and the netting as a barrier keeps the ground critters away. Appreciate y'all watching and commenting! Helps keep us visable.

No. They go inside the coop. We just don’t want them sleeping in the nest box.

Probably so. We do “all in”-“all out” meaning I’d start a whole new flock. Especially if you are selling eggs and trying to make a profit.

Do you feed them anything? Or do they just forage for food? If you feed them, anything special to make sure it’s being feed good food and not seedoils and bad stuff like that so it creates a good quality egg to eat

I’ve watched so many videos on egg washing or cleaning and they are all different. I really like your setup with the premier fence and egg mobile. I want to try this but fear hawks in our area would pick these off slowly but surely. I currently have 9 white leghorns

@@shawn8163 nice. Try to make sure they have some trees or some type of concert they can go under. We elect not to wash because we keep the eggs clean. Different folks have different opinions but after 3 years we have never had an issue due to an unwashed egg.

Chickens lay eggs during the day. Typical early morning and are finished by late afternoon. They sleep on the floor.

You're not, but if they get covered in poop, what you gonna do, especially if you are trying to sell them. That's why its a good idea to keep the nesting boxes clean. Factory farmed eggs are disgusting, because the whole farm is disgusting, so they have to wash the eggs in order to be able to sell them.

Good stuff man. Also, fresh eggs with the bloom on it also draws snakes. Put one or two in a minnow trap and sit it on the ground and if a snake comes around you’ll catch him so he can’t get your little babies or other eggs.
