I actually live in Escanaba. I prefer Dobber's, but I can easily eat either. To me, it's really the breading that's all that's different between the two. I kind of like the breading more to Dobber's, but as I said, I can eat either. I won't reject a Gram's pasty. Also, I don't need any condiments on them. To me they taste fine plain. A part of me wants to say that condiments ruin them.

Do they have any rutabaga in them? I buy pasties at Walmart. Made in Florence WI. Sold frozen, not bad, and cheap, 3.25, 18 ounces. Not my Grandma's but close, makes a meal. Grandma made two dozen a week, WE ate them hot or cold. No microwaves or toaster ovens. Lots of pasties in the, North woods, have fun, enjoy your journey, I will.

Yes these have rutabaga - most places make with or without - I like with. I've become a BIG BIG pasty fan!! I'd never had or heard of them until I came up here a few years ago. :-)

These look so different to pasties in the UK! Very nice nonetheless, is the pastry like a calzone or something? Ours always use flaky puff pastry.

Yes - the do look different. But most here are called Cornish and claim to have been brought over by people who immigrated to work the mines in the area.

I haven't had those that you can get at the grocery.. Next time I'm there I will try one. I'll guess that I usually will stick to the ones I think are the best - Jean Kay's in Marq. :-)

Interesting… I’m from Devon in England. Whilst Cornwall is the namesake of pasties, Devon next door also has its own pasties (which are basically the same but with a different crimp) . Our pasties look different in shape and in pastry. Ours are normally a flaky short crust butter pastry. The fillings look similar. Are they beef skirt, Swede and carrot? We also have other fillings here - cheese and onion, chicken and mushroom, steak and ale, steak and blue cheese or chicken tikka are common fillings.

Some or most places do different versions like you say from the traditional pasty, like chicken, venison, pizza, veggie and that kind of thing. I usually much prefer the traditional. For what is called "traditional" here most places here use ground beef, my favorite place which has closed used chopped steak. In addition to potato, with swede (called rutabaga here lol), onion, salt and pepper and carrot. Not every pasty has swede, most places make a swede and NO swede option. I love the swede taste. You can't find these in many other places than the Upper Peninsula of Michigan because so many immigrated here to work in the mines. It was the perfect food for them. Now, many homemade family recipe versions tend to have slight variations. So we get to thank those immigrants for bringing a nice hearty tasty pocket of flavor with them. :-) All the best

@@Waters_dacat, I live in Escanaba. I didn't care for pasties when I was a kid. But there is the whole thing as well that whenever I ate pasties, it was because of the lunches at schools. Pasties were sometimes the the daily lunch menu item. The pasties at school weren't the greatest, but when I got older and tried them again as an adult (especially Dobber's and Gram's), I began to appreciate/like them more. Now I can easily eat them. Actually, a lot of the stuff I didn't like as a kid I like now as an adult. I guess we do change over the years. But yeah. I like them now, but I can also see why someone wouldn't like them. I'd rather have a steak or pizza or burger or a sub instead of a pasty. Pasties are good, but not my favorite/go-to item.

Neither have carrots or rutabaga. My mother always put those and potatoes. It would just not taste the same without carrots and rutabaga. Also it looks like they used too much butter in the crust on the second one.

Brown-bagged, wrapped in bakery paper versus fancy, logo-printed white paper bag, wrapped in foil... didn't even need you to taste 'em, Dano... I know which will be better. Now, as to the prices... wow! A buck or more expensive than in our area! Even Krupp's up in Twin Lakes is only $5, and they are huge & delicious! You need to try Krupp's when you get into our area.

I actually prefer Dobber's. Gram's is still good though. I wouldn't reject a Gram's pasty if given one. And I live in Escanaba too and eat pasties often (but not too often). In early February 2023, I had a Gram's and Dobber's pasty. The only major difference I noticed was the breading. The meat and vegetables tasted the same. But I kind of like the Dobber's breading more. I think it's really going to come down to personal opinion though. I actually like the different opinions though. I don't want to see either place going out of business, especially if I go to get pasties one night for dinner and one place randomly runs out of pasties for the day since it was a pasty day and everyone in Escanaba wanted/craved pasties. Then I can turn to the other one. Or maybe one closes sooner than the other, and if one closes, I have another option. Also, the competition isn't too extreme in Escanaba. They think about each other. If two places sell the same items and one runs out, they'll direct the customer to the other place instead of acting like "buy from us or no one." Elmer's (the local grocery store) and Donut Connection will do this on Fat Tuesday with the paczkis. Elmer's will send customers over to Donut Connection if they run out of paczkis or a specific paczki (like chocolate or jelly filled). So I'm sure Dobber's and Gram's are the same.
