Conroy had the biggest heart. He rose above. His talent broke through a normally impenetrable barrier.

When I did a year in prison, a friend on the outside sent me a copy of "The Great Santini". I wore that book out. That was over 20yrs. ago. Thus beginning my second act.

When he wrote The Water Is Wide it became a Movie called Conrack starring Jon Voight. It took place in Parris Island, South Carolina and it was the same place that future Motown Bass Guitar Player grew up.

Same as me. The only time I lived anywhere without being beaten was was after my father died. I am very bitter about how he treated us kids. I'm surprised at least one or two of us didn't die. Well maybe physically. We all died one way or another mentally with psychosomatic illnesses over decades.

Takes courage to write about his family in this way...unfortunately it is a story so true of many families around the world to one degree or another. If the father was abusive, he had to have learned it from his own father.

Pat Conroy's Father may have felt that despite his abusive behavior, Pat became successful and in his own narcistic way may have felt he was responsible for Pat's success. I wonder if he ever regretted not being able to do a book that didn't involve his past life in which his main protagonist didn't have the problematic issues that he had.

Pat Conroy is the only Author that I know of where the Male Characters go through such anguish but overcome. I read The Lords Of Discipline. This Father was a very distrubed man and Tom Wingo's Father was very horrible as seen in The Prince Of Tides that was mentioned on The Sopranos.

Pat Conroy are to Southern Writers most notably John Grisham what Dominick Dunne & Tom Wolfe (RIP), were to Northern Writers. John Grisham does Legal Thrillers many of which take place in Mississippi & Memphis and Pat does books about the complicated Parent Child Relationships. Dominick Dunne did books about the faulously wealthy, powerful and cruel and narcisstic while Tom Wolfe did books about the rich, powerful, and weatlhy in a satire. My favorites were The Bonfire Of The Vanities and A Man In Full.
