I remember this kid who was a punter but he was different. His legs was powerful, he can punt over 50 yards easily. He was also 6'3 and 240 lbs. he was fast and powerful. Imagine an NFL punter mixed with a strong safety or linebacker. He would punt the ball perfectly and speed down field faster than everyone and lay out the punt returner. I never seen a punter punt the ball and run down field and hit the returner so hard he fumbles. He would have been a beast in the NFL. Too bad he got into drugs.

I used to work as a salesman and I would go to gas stations and try to sell car cleaning products to waiting cars. I actually got to meet Ray Allen, the guy who punts for the Patriots, and since I'm a huge Patriots fan it was the highlight of my short lived sales career. I was in high school when Ray Guy changed the way we look at punters. Booming punts still get you into the NFL, but punters now have a variety of kicks that make it hard to catch the ball (a knuckle ball kick that floats down like a knuckle ball pitch), and other specialty kicks designed to make sure there is no run back, or to pin the other team deep. Yes, a good punter is a weapon.

Can anyone find the punt that set the record for distance in 1968 ? It was the Jets punter O'Neill ( might be spelled with one L ) in 1968 for 98 yards, ( yes line of scrimmage was his own one yard line ) not in Denver, I want to say in NYC, and it went about 65 or so yards in the air and kept rolling until downed at the 1. That clip should be on this thread. I'll never forget that one. Also, perhaps we should pay homage to the original punting weapon, Oakland's Ray Guy. He could hit the overhead scoreboard hanging from the roof of the Superdome in New Orleans.
