@@mariomanningfan Old but Polian didnt really change the rule, the rule had been in place since the 70's but the refs werent always enforcing it. Ty Law broke the rules multiple times but didnt get penalized so Polian went up there and made sure it will get called in the future. Same thing happened with Legion of Boom, they very breaking the rules constantly but since every one of them did it and did it all the time the refs didnt call it. LOB was only a thing because refs for some reason let them break rules

@@mikko3 never feel the need to disclaim when commenting back to me. I never understood why people think its wierd to respond to a week old post, haha. True the rule was there. But it was really after indy went to NE in 03 or 04 and got beat up that we heard about contact after 5 yards. Overtime, I've went from leaning towards NE cheating and accepting more that Harrison was way undersized and wasn't suited for games he couldn't turn into a track meet. And Peyton's brilliance was all pre snap. If what he called wasn't going to happen, he was unlikely to use any athleticism to just conjure up a play

AJ brings up a great point about payton. I remember a skinny post route on a MNF game. Maybe it was SNF. Payton looks right to move the safties, then looks to the left hash, inadvertantly bringing the 2 deep closer to the skinny post. Throws the pass up the left seam, and the WR gets crushed. 7 minutes of time to get him off the field because dude was unconcious. Applause and prayers from both teams. What does Payton do on the next play? Sends the same skinny post to Austin Collie, completes, and Collie gets crushed. Not hurt, but it was the same play design. It seemed to me that Payton's thought concept was not about receiver safety, but on available offensive proficiency 🤔

Hawk was referring to the rule change following Colts vs Patriots playoff game in 04 or 05. Patriots DBs held/pressed WRs all game long because it was legal to do so at that time, so the following off-season was when the rule changed, he wasn't referring to Peyton getting his WRs killed, which was also true lol

The Colts teams were built on speed - their receivers were much faster than pretty much anyone's defenders at the time, so the tactic employed was to have the defender grab hold of the receiver & not let him run down the field. Good change IMO, though I also agree that the rules have swung too far against the defense... what AJ said is 100% true in that they aren't allowed to stop the offensive players anymore.

The Patriots abused the refs call for illegal contact being a judgement call in their playoff run in 2001 iirc the next year illegal contact became the way it is now where the penalty is automatic and not a judgement call.

@@michaeltell9905 you’re conflating the two things, the Colts had dome receivers that disappeared outdoors on grass, no illegal contact was needed to take them out of the game, the illegal contact stuff was on tight ends and it wasn’t just the Patriots or in 01, it was in 03 and the Panthers did the same thing to Philly, the difference being that Bill Polian was on the rules committee and was present in foxboro and was apparently cursing up a storm in the press box screaming for Roman Phifer to be called for holding tight end Marcus Pollard. Apparently the Patriots staff almost ejected polian from the building. He then went and got the rules changed to favor Peyton and the colts. Of course after Peyton put up a record season the next year with the new rules, the colts scored even fewer points in foxboro the next playoffs lmao…
