This isn't difficult. If you're doing something under the guise of news or analysis, then generally, you don't pay your news subjects. ESPN is in theory, a news organization and paying someone for an interview is a no no. At the very least, you should disclose it. If Mcafee built his brand by paying interview subjects, that puts his rise in a new light. In my opinion anyway.
