The answer is simple; Crystal Silence. When Manfred Eicher brought the two geniuses together for the first time in Rainbow Studio in Oslo, they discovered that they read each others thoughts!. The entire album was made in one day, most of the songs just one take. (And then they toured off and on for forty years. (Gary & Chick)

Such a great performance and this is only one of how many times? Anyway; Metheny was never a student of Mick. But of course, and as I'm sure you know, they played together in Burton's band and they have had a close connection ever since and played together many times during the years.

there ya go... Question: Hi Pat -- I have two questions (1) - I've seen PMG 5 times in the past 12 years -- on each occasion, you wore a striped shirt. Is there any reason behind the striped shirt phenomenon or is it just a personal preference? If the reason is related to superstitions, PLEASE PLEASE keep wearing the shirts -- every performance I've attended has been fantastic! Pat’s Answer: the honest answer is; apathy. apathy in this case towards style and fashion. i just don't care about it. to me, i wish there was a uniform, like a janitor's uniform or something for what we do. i do see being a musician as a service industry - not unlike refrigirator repair or something. for me, by wearing essentially the same thing all the time, which is something that isn't really ever in style or out of style, it is one less thing i have to think about, so i can think more about what i should be thinking about.
@lightaces3 жыл бұрын
Mick Goodrick - who Pat knew very well -never learned to drive because he didn't want to waste brain capacity which could be used for guitar playing. Hey, to each his own, right?
@mongoharry77656 күн бұрын
@@lightacesWHAT a story. I often think about the fact that Metheny's success is probably based to a large extent on his willingness to sweat details that had nothing to do with music, like his stage show...ever notice that little move he makes with his arms in "phase dance"? To people far away in the audience, it looks like he is causing the sound to swirl out of his guitar by his arm movements...and then there's a pic ive seen if him in his early days when he was the band's "driver", criss crossing the US with his "Airstream" trailer 😎...What a committed guy.

I saw (HEARD) Gary and Pat in 1976 at a small college in New Hampshire in January, very cold and white everywhere outside. They pulled up in a Volkswagen Bus with Steve Swallow bug eyed, glued to the window. There were only about 30 of us in the audience. A fool was manning the spot light and directing the beam on the WRONG musician when another was soloing. Gary stopped abruptly and said, "I can't do this!" They were anxious to pack it up and leave. We pleaded with him. big time. He finally caved and they put on a stellar show. I can hear the yelling, "Sheldon get the fuck away from that light. Get down here!" he did. I was but 22 and only beginning to scratch the surface of "alternative" music. This band saved me from the pin headed disco scene, spineless pop and heavy metal. I had the good fortune of seeing Gary and Chick on a revolving stage about fifteen years later. I wore out a bunch of LPs and can still here friends and family, "Do you really like this?" No, I LOVE it. I remain grateful. The kicker is that Gary Burton does not have this concert on his career list of performances. I've always hoped to convey this memory with Mr. Burton. He probably has always wanted to forget it. I can only say, "THANK YOU!!!" #WWG1WGA

Their disparite views on practicing blow me away. Burton says in his biography that he only practices to get ready for tours, and if I'm not mistaken, that anyone who does it more than a few hours a day is an "ass". Metheny talks about music being a "24-hour commitment" and told the Berklee grads in his famous commencement speech that he "really should be home practicing". I prefer Metheny's point of view. 🖤
