This is the music that lifted my 17 year old dog to heaven last week. He is sitting by Lyle at the piano gently swaying to the music.

This is one of those songs where I couldn't remember the title or the band name, and I didn't know enough of the melody to ask Google. This was one of my mom's favorite songs, and growing up, she would play it at least once every single Sunday. She passed away in January, so obviously I couldn't ask her any questions about it because the tiny bit of the song I did know was running laps in my head. It was driving me insane! I ended up asking my uncle, her youngest brother, if he knew which song it was, AND HE DID! Now I have it saved to my YT and on my Spotify so I'll never forget it again. This one's for you mom. I love you and I miss you so gd much. 💜💙

I am sorry. But such a sweet tribute to your Mom! The Piece has a special meaning to me that is very precious to my Mom And Dad when they came to help me rehab from a terrible car accident In 2022.

No shade on Pat, he’s great, but most people seem to underestimate the contribution that Lyle made to Pat’s melodical landscape. I think some of their most beautiful melodies actually originated from him.
@ThePedroholiver Жыл бұрын
That’s a fact! Lyle was a melodic genius. His melodies are absolutely astonishing, and his piano parts are like no other. The man was a genius in every way.

I fully agree. Lyle was an integral part of the overall mastery behind this music. RIP Lyle👌🙏❤️

IDK how they met and stayed so dedicated to each other, let alone THAT dedicated to their desired and achieved elements. Almost seems ordained no matter what other virtuostic piano, kybd, synth and organ player one might consider as a sub, even temoprarily. Not easy to express... "Lyle" was/is still a masterfully dynamic and emotional communicator. "RIP LYLE MAYS, brought us some heaven to this earthly realm"! ↲」♡ ↕↗
@warshipsatin8764 Жыл бұрын
why did you wait until he died to say that
@jeffreyfeinstein5525 Жыл бұрын
@@warshipsatin8764 Possibly the previous comments and timing were catalysts for mah urge to express how ah've felt. Ah'm pretty sure ah've been engaged in such topics with others in real time, at some point. Just happened to catch this upload and the commenters. Likely, at least some others would agree...to some degree. Many more "Lyle" elements could be expressed on this composition alone. Although, it would be difficult to 'say' much of anything ab mah thoughts and feelings to any of the PMG members in person. Thank you and Peace!

Pitsburgh Syria Mosque, Front row mezzanine seats, 1989. Perfect sound and view. To see them play this album live before it was released was breathtaking, particularly the percussion! They get to where they're tossing instruments to grab another while letting it all cook until it explodes at the end with joy.

Not sure if I was at the 1989 one, but certainly miss the Syria Mosque, the Stanley theater, and all the other smaller clubs that closed but seeing PAT with the group anywhere was awesome. Last saw him last year (2023) at the Carnegie Library in Homestead.

Got to see the First Circle Tour. When they did "Forward March" at the beginning of the show Pat was up on stage playing guitar synth and everyone else marched in from various entrances like a marching band playing various drums and percussion instruments and I believe Lyle was playing trumpet. Definitely a show to remember.

I LOVE the mesmerizing visuals for this video! After all these years, I've finally come to think of the Pat Metheny Group as simply "Metheny-Mays." Just Metheny-Mays. Without Lyle Mays' role, there never would have been the Pat Metheny Group we love. To me, he and his keyboards were the major component that gave their songs such layer-upon-layer of depth and emotion, along with the voices of Metheny's guitars and synths (and Pedro Aznar's vocals).

I saw PMG at a small lecture hall called Mcdonald Kiva at MSU in 1978. We sat on the floor 15 feet from the band. I had no idea who he was, I was with friends who had only heard of the band. The next 1 1/2 hours changed my life on how I felt about music. I like a lot of different music but nothing comes close to touching my soul the way PMG can. RIP Lyle

Each and every time i hear this intro, i remind a sunny afternoon in Aix-en-Provence. A friend of mine and i were 16 and we were both hearing Metheny for the very first time. We spent hours trying to understand the intro. Playing the first measures, trying to count it, and repeat. My girlfriend (today my wife) is remembering this afternoon with those 2 poor musicians as an absurd amount of passion for something none of us could understand. This 11/8... And thanks to Take 5, we finally broke it. But i'll remember this emotion forever.

I've read the handclaps pattern is 3-2 3-2 2 / 3-3 2-2 but always have trouble "counting it" i.e keeping in time w/ it. A beautiful puzzle to me still. ;-) I say it's an impossible task choosing a favorite PMG song but First Cir cle of course must be included among the finalists.

Gotta be one of the greatest jazz compositions of the last 50 years. Great fractal-mandalas. A mandelbrot-set or two might add another philosophical dimension to the depth of the piece. But well done, just the same. A worthy labor of love in making this video. Much thanks from Japan! p.s ... My other favorite piece from that album is the ethereal 'Mas Alla' featuring the incomparable voice of Pedro Aznar.

@@sunnyrhino Thanks. I have been lucky to live in areas that don't have a huge appreciation for Pat(or jazz, for that matter). Two weeks before he played in Lincoln NE, I logged into the ticket site and found front row seats for his Side Eye tour performance. My 10 yr old was treated to "the best band rehearsal ever!". Two times in my life, I have had front row seats to see Pat. Like having a concert in my living room, so close.

Wyjątkowo piekny i emocjonalny utwór. Za każdym razem kiedy słucham czuję, jak odbudowuje mnie mentalnie i emocjonalnie. Działa jak lek po przykrych, trudnych doświadczeniach, po chorobie, czy przygnębieniu. W cudowny sposób dodaje energii i optymizmu. Pat Metheny to genialny kompozytor i muzyk.
Lyle Mays completes the unique sound and the whole ensemble hear the drum ow bakithi
