I believe this song is one of the more significant in modern jazz tunes. Equivalent to "Three views of a secret" from Pastorius..

For me, there’s just too many to choose. It appears “my absolute favorite“ changes week to week. I met Pat once while my wife & I were on a random walk in Kansas City on 18th St ironically not far from his sidewalk medallion at the Jazz HOF.

I Love this tune so much, I remember my teenage years playing Final Fantasy 5 and 6 on my PSX with this playing in the background. I've listened to The Road To You album so many times i have it lithographed in my memory note for note.
this captures the soundtrack to most of my life. Thanks Pat & Lyle.

One of the best things ever happened in world of music. I'm speechless regarding PMG. I sure hope the mays metheny rodby etc will resurface before they die from old age. :) No more solo albums Pat, bring on the rest of the magic!!

Pat feels the pressure of time. He describes himself as swinging for the fences (Baseball analogy for those unfamiliar) on his current work- playing not for the audience to understand today, but a generation from now. In his 60’s, he knows has has travelled more roads than he will travel as a musican. He is also a restless musical soul- like Bruce Hornsby. Would love to see the 2 of them do an album of original stuff.

@@DavGreg I've always wanted to see him doing something with Terje Rypdal. They're both jazz guitarists, with strong ties to rock music and fearless of probing into more experimental fields. Rypdal's tone would have been a natural fit in pieces like this one.

SLAP OFF INTO THE DEEP END! I've always thought this song to be Eleven minutes of powerful and beautifully organized insanity. But to see it live takes it even further into outer-space, if you know what I mean!

People will be talking about this gigantic, beautiful tune long after all of us are gone. So glad a couple versions got documented. Just wish the filmmakers here had gotten out of the way and just showed the band. Way too much fancy faux-artistic twirling blurry imagery. Would’ve loved to just see the guys play. But thankful this exists nonetheless.

What moron gave thumbs down to this? Metheny and Mays really do have a deep understanding of the human condition and how to express it through music. Their music and musicianship, particularly Pat's, is truly miraculous and a gift to the world.

JudeJaded15 All who ever played in the PMG are total inspirations. It's funny, i don't pretend not to be huge fan, but best keyboard / piano player in the world, same for bass, drums, guitar... you name it they always had it all... I wish i'd be half of the musician they are with creativeness and ideas.

I can see a similarity in sophistication here, per M. Dugage's comment below, to Pastorius' 'Three Views.' Sort of like The PMG plays Schoenberg. Weird, man, but utterly transporting. it's why words can't speak of music. Funny how on the ROAD TO YOU version, as Metheny is doing the opening theme the echoes on stage almost make it sound as if there's an alto saxophone player doing a unison thing. Can't beat this band.
