Under the gaze of southern Arizona’s cinnamon-hued Canelo Hills, a mother shares ancient building traditions with her three sons. In Puebloan creation stories, adobe structures, like people, emerge from the earth and return to the earth. For Athena Steen, it’s the family memories, skills, knowledge, love, laughter-and the clay itself-that endure.
All clay and standing dead timber harvests in this film were conducted following the rules of local jurisdictions.

Oso, you look so good! Panther, I am so glad you left your room, after all! Benito, you have become a great master in a art I love the most. Bill, Athena, I am so so so grateful, and feel so honored for the time I could spend with you. Margit

The quote near the opening: When you all come together you can accomplish miracles" is part of the history of guilds, and the Timber Framers Guild and our Heartwood School is proud to recognize stories such as this one: using the heart of trees to build needed structures. Thank you: Cuando se trabaja juntos, se pueden hacer milagros.

The Canelo Project literally changed the course of my family's life. We went to a workshop 5 years ago, and our eyes were opened to a new way of building, living, and educating our kids. That little corner of AZ is so special and so gorgeous, we ended up leaving the city and moving close by.

It's been and honor to know and learn from this kind and talented family. We're fortunate that they have been producing books, guides and videos to share with our students worldwide so that they too can build healthy, beautiful and safe buildings for their families and communities.
