in Singapore we have a similar thing... its called 'ice kachang' ... ice beans, direct translation. its shaved ice with condensed milk and coloured sugar syrup. below the shaved ice, contains red beans, jelly and other goodness that makes ice kachang a must have after a hot tiring day. Usually best enjoyed if you have eaten spicy food. helps you to cool down.

Victoria ranaudo Patbingsu is basically a korean version of Halo halo. The korean one don't use evaporated milk which is very basic of halo halo and they have fewer ingredients. In my personal opinion, the taste of the Korean version depends primarily on the ice cream on top.

Federic Aujero just chiming in. like someone mentioned above, all varieties of "shaved ice" actually originated from china. while patbingsoo is a traditional korean dessert, halo halo originated from japan so i'd say it's more similar to the japanese kakigori. patbingsoo doesn't contain evaporated milk because milk was not really common and traditional korean foods didn't really favor overly sweet ingredients. also the traditional korean version had a specific set of ingredients, but the modern ones have like a million different variety. im surprised that you find patbingsoo dependent primarily on the ice cream, since modern version use blocks of frozen flavored tea/juice (black tea, green tea, coffee, etc), rather than the conventional frozen ice water and adding syrup.

wiseeileen Korean dduk and Japanese mocha are quite different in taste and texture. Mochi is made of sweet rice, very sugary, texture sticky. Korean dduk has more variety, including crumbly texture, only mildly sweet, made from regular rice, etc.. There are also dduk made from sweet rice and chewy.

We have a patbingsu equivalent in the Philippines as well... it's called "halo-halo" (pronounced: hah-low hah-low) which literally translates to: mix-mix. It contains Ube (taro), leche flan, pinipig, sweet beans, ice cream, evaporated/condensed milk and any other local sweets you care to add on top of shaved ice.

We have something similar in Thailand, only we don't put any ice cream on it. Sometimes we put in sweetened sticky rice, lotus seeds, and we like our flavored syrups, too. It's hot in Thailand all the time though, so it's not seasonal for us. Oh, and our ice shaver is strictly manual (hand grind).

yea, in China, 2000 years ago they already had an ice room undergroud to keep ice from winter to summer so royal family and those could eat it. in Japan, that was imported in Heian era (8C). there was a record that they shaved ice and put simple syrup to eat. From China how to keep ice until summer was introduced to surrounding countries i guess.
