CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patch (Robin Williams) brings joy to the patients in the Children's Ward, but Dean Walcott (Bob Gunton) isn't laughing.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

The little girl in this scene was a real life cancer patient. Thankfully, she recovered from the cancer and has grown into a beautiful young woman. She says about Robin Williams, "He is an amazing man, and that he brought so much laughter and life, to myself, and my family when we needed it the most."

because when you truly understand despair and sadness, you become afraid of it, because sometimes you don't even know what will happen to you, and when you know how real pain feel, you won't want someone else, know them or not, to feel the same. so know this, you are special, if life won't tell you, then i will

Generally those who try to bring joy to others are the saddest. A lot of comedians are depressed, and I can understand why. Humour is a defense mechanism that minimalises your own issues and helps people move on from theirs. Everyone but you gets closure.

It is so lovely that this girl beat cancer. Proof that, sometimes, laughter and joy can be powerful medicine. Also loved that they used actual kids from Make A Wish, not child actors, so the reactions would have been genuine. Moreover, I believe that it is completely something Robin would have done. He brought so much joy to others.

But this movie is terrible. All of Robin Williams’ comedies are terrible. But it’s not really his fault because they are supposed to be family friendly and he doesn’t write the script. His stand up material is very funny and that is how he should be remembered. Not by crap like this.

Having met the real Patch Adams I asked the same question as many did. Was Robin Williams portrayal of you accurate? Dressed in his clown suit and huge clown feet he simply retorted "What do you think?' He did go on to say there could have been no better actor to catch his feelings about humour in the field of medicine. Laughter is of course the best medicine so I say to Dr Patch and Robin.....thanks for being you.

Did he? I read that while he had respect for Robin Williams, he was pretty critical of how he portrayed him in the movie and of how it was written, that his character and ideas were dumbed down to being nothing but a fun doctor in order to sell the movie.

I've been his TV fan since I was little and I'm sure alot of his other TV fans would have wanted to help him too, if we knew about the hardship he was suffering from, before he suicided. After all, he was decent, and he was a great actor and comedian and he brought so much laughter and happiness to everybody. One good turn deserves another.

I miss Robin. He was such a funny actor and loved everyone - he taught people the meaning of life: to always have fun, despite what you feel. Despite his depression he made people laugh, even if he wasn’t always able to.

I think these patients really needed to be cheered up. He was both a physician and performing artist!

It seems like Robin Williams never really 'acted' a day in his life. He infused his own persona, humour and intellect into every role he played. This takes a great human. One who will never be forgotten. 🙏❤
