CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Patch (Robin Williams) gives a speech to the Medical Board saying that doctors should not only fight death, they should fight indifference.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series.

The concept of transference is not without reason. And that reason is simply bandwidth. The average person does not have the emotional bandwidth to care to that level about so many people. Consider a doctor in a hospital overseeing the care of 30 people per month. Let's say 1 in 30 of those patients die. If you knew every one of those patients on a deep personal and emotional level, that means you are mourning the loss of a friend every month. That will take its toll on you. It's not sustainable. You have an emotional breakdown. And how are you supposed to provide care for others if you're constantly in a state of mourning. Yes you should care for people and be kind to them. But as a doctor your job is not to become their friend, it's to get them well enough so they can leave and go back to their life.

"a doctor's mission is not just to prevent death but to improve the quality of life. That's why you treat a disease you may win or you may lose but you treat a person I guarantee you will win every time no matter what the outcome" - What a beautiful beautiful masterpiece! Would love to know who penned the words for this screenplay

This is so true. Many doctors have a lot of "head white" mentality type who think they are gods or superhuman. Doctors are meant to uphold the Hippocratic oath but unfortunately money talks and most people just go for the money and put moral principles below them.

On the one hand, I agree with you, it's a good Robin Williams movie. HOWEVER, on the other, this movie is an insult to the actual real life Dr. Patch Adams & others that the movie (mis)portrayed.

I use this quote every single day throughout my nursing training and also throughout my clinical practice. It is such a beautiful quote that enables us as healthcare professionals to treat the person instead of seeing them as the disease itself. I remember one of my clinical placements, a patient thanked me for treating them like a human being instead of treating them like a disease from a textbook.

He is often referred to as a comic genius. Robin Williams was and always will be all kinds of genius. Gone way too soon. He had the ability to break you up in stitches of laughter one moment and then literally reach in and tear your heart apart the next. This is but only one of many profound and special moments in his films. He was an extraordinary actor/comedian but he was and even more extraordinary human being. God bless you sir R.I.P.

Though the criticism he has of this movie (doesn't blame Robin for it though) is that it made him look more like a clown (though those doctors that do work along side with him do go around hospitals around the world dressed as them, it's amazing to see! Also the relationship in the movie wasn't with a girl it was with a man :)

This movie Inspired me when I was young to get into the caregiver field ( I’ve been told I’d be an amazing nurse but I can’t handle blood and such lol ) so instead I’ve had the honor to share in lives of adults with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities, and help them to live there best life ….. I’ve been through many trainings and we are told time and time again to not become attached to the people we serve , I’ve been told many times that they are not our friends and we must maintain professionalism at all times , but these same “instructor’s “ have never spent countless hours day in and day out with these individuals, they haven’t held there hands as they faced there fears , or been the only one who calms them down and provide them with that safe feeling they need , haven’t taken walks in the park and seen there eyes light up and excitement in there face to see flowers or wildlife , haven’t been on adventures , I understand the concept of professionalism and distance but as a human you will form a bond of some sort with them and grow attached , and I’ve learned to just like he says , if you treat them as a person and with dignity and respect then everyone wins but if you treat them like they are just another “special needs condition “ or your paycheck , then no one wins and you miss out on an opportunity to create something beautiful in both of your lives and you can still do that while being professional and have that boundary ( I hope that makes sense ) ❤️ life is a beautiful thing

Robin Williams is/was a genius, just as the real Patch Adams. I'm impressed by Patch Adams and his deep and profound love for humanity.

This scene is about helping each other, no matter the task but to always be there for each other. And that by doing so you are a doctor, for helping someone with any issues they may be facing.

This is the best speech in modern film and cinema, I have ever heard. Thank you Robin Williams. Al Pacino's final speech in Scent of a Woman, and Mel Gibson in Braveheart, would be second and third. I often watch this speech 1-15 times/ year, every year. Thank you Robin Williams. Thank you for your talent, empathy, compassion and understanding for others. You truly did fit this role. Patch Adams was truly the man you were on and off the screen. No one will ever forget you, Robin. Your words and your films, will always live on. From Alberta, Canada-Thank you.

+Holden Weatherfield ... I agree :) I lost some of my beloved persons, daddy, best friends, dear uncles.. It is not humorous but it is fact of life. It is indeed funny to think that finally we will meet them again at last :))

Sharing gratitude to soul of Robin Williams who shared beautiful moments on this planet earth and have brought smile to millions of people. This video itself shares beautiful about taking death and understanding death with a more new perception. Lets change our perception about death... "Whats wrong with death sir? Why are we so morally afraid of death? Why can't we treat death with humanity and dignity and decency and god forbid may be with humour? Death is not the enemy gentleman... if we want to fight with diseases then lets fight with the most terrible disease that is indifference..." Prayers to this beautiful soul who departed from his body may divine bless the soul of this being...
