I felt split on that. One hand it is sad that his son was suffering for his ambitions, on the other hand quitting his job is what put them in those circumstance. The Pursuit of Happiness shows why it is so hard to break out of poverty in America. Without a a financial cushion WS plan was insanely risky.

I once quit my great paying job and drove cross-country to hand-deliver my resume for a job I really wanted. I was scheduled for an interview with a panel of 7 executives within two days. One of the many questions they asked me was, "how would you feel if you didn't get the job". I said, "I'd be fine because I know I did everything in my power to get it so I don't have an excuse that I didn't try hard enough". One of the last questioned they asked me was, "where do you see yourself in 5-years", I said, "celebrating the 5-year anniversary of you asking me that question", they all laughed. yes, definitely. its an old worn out saying "don't judge a book by its cover", but it is some foundational wisdom. i can't tell you how many times i've been browsing Twitch and i judged them prematurely. however when i stuck around and gave them a chance, i discovered some really amazing and talented people. then again... the opposite has happened as well, i stuck around, and discovered there were some qualities about that person, that really put me off. and then sometimes you may even realize you were right about them from the beginning. lol i think some of the best advice you can ever give a person, and sometimes difficult to teach, is to be slow in judgement. i imagine with HR, you must learn this well.

If someone said something like this while I was interviewing them, I'd definitely view it as a strong statement. 1) It shows that you aren't afraid to admit that you're wrong or that you "don't know." You don't know how difficult it is for most people to do that. It shows that you possess humility and self-awareness. 2) Knowing a bunch of answers doesn't prove much. With enough experience or training anyone can "know" a lot about something. But experience and training can't teach you to be a CRITICAL THINKER. The smartest person in the room isn't the one who knows everything; it's the person who knows how solve. People who are excellent critical thinkers create solutions to problems (and often in an efficient way). They are major assets in just about every situation in life, especially jobs. As a bonus... they are usually easy to train since critical thinkers are never incompetent morons.

I made 55 application to enter in Paramedic school.... took me 5 year of working in mcdonalds and gas station but i knew what i wanted to do. Last year i got accepted.... and now im rocking a 94 % average in all classes (i miss sleeping tho XD). No matter how much try you make, you only need 1 to win. Dont give up!

Keep working it. I just want to throw this out there in case readers are looking for a decent job with low schooling for a good salary. Radiation Therapist or an Ultrasound Tech. Both have a median pay after a few years of $70-80,000++. Entry can be an internship in some places, a certificate program in some places or an associates from a community college at the maximum. First year pay is greater (nearly double) than a 2 year degree cost at a CC. Minimal to no student loan debt.

I remember really nailing it in my interview on my first job. When I was interviewed, the Head Supervisor asked me what I've been doing for 5months before this interview and I told him truthfully that I applied to more than 12+ companies and there was no callback since. When asked "why should we hire you despite it all?" And I responded, "Because I keep on trying. I wouldn't be here if I didn't try." After all that, I was hired right then and there. It was a very memorable interview for me and it is something I will never forget in my career. 😊 Keep going 👍

Hey man! I was working an awesome job for about 2 years. Was hired even before graduation. But, end of last year I started yearning to work overseas. So I started applying for any place across the ocean that fits my particular field. Big companies and even small companies. I was rejected a total of 32 times over 2 months, and this is me with a very powerful resume, showreel and 2 years experience at the most prestigious company in this industry in my country. But I eventually landed a job that I absolutely loved. Im still in my home country and working remotely for this new job now, but the pay is 4 times more and the work is actually less. Dont give up, keep going. But if you reach about 100 rejections, Id say maybe look at yourself to try and see if the problem is maybe from yourself. "If it smells like sh!t everywhere you go, then maybe its time to look under your shoe"

Funnily enough, I interviewed with a company two years ago for a service technician role, and their whole attitude towards "owning up when you don't know an answer but striving to find one" was reversed. They would rather me have BS'd things to customers instead of doing the more honorable thing. I'm glad I didn't get that job.

A lot of people have too much pride to say "I don't know" and start making shit up which becomes apparent. I notice this at work too much. 99% of time when a person doesn't know how to do a specific function they will never ask anyone what it is or how to do it because it puts them in an inferior position and compromises their status. not far off. i'm retired, but we used to love hiring folks like this. walking encyclopedias are great until their knowledge is obsolete--its the person who constantly learns that helps the company. the hire who is seeing what the company can do to make his resume look good? she thinks she's hiding it, but we all know. My boss hated hearing "I don't know" but what saved my own ass was he knew I was going to find out--right now. I can't tell you how many times i ask a question at a company i'm shopping at, the employee has no answer...and isn't interested in going to find out. Do they really think no one will ever ask that question again? I always found the answer when i was the employee asked, as much to help the customer as it was to become the smartest dude in the room (not being arrogant, I just get accused of it, even yesterday :) Not everyone is smart, but everyone CAN be knowledgeable and that can get you halfway to solutions).

Will Smith prides himself on his work ethics and Chris Gardner seems to be the epitome of self discipline and good work ethics. Learning Chris Gardners story and how he kept fighting for his dream under the worst circumstances gave Will goosebumps all the way to his neck I am sure! :p

The beautiful part about this is that it’s 100% accurate to real life. You can have the absolute best upbringing and opportunities, but that won’t ensure that you’re going to be successful. Success like drive is something your born with an imprinted desire for. This is coming from a high school failure that had to re-take the senior year and now has 2 degrees and working toward his masters degree. We all can achieve it, it’s just out there waiting for you.

After high school I didn’t know what to do, so i got into trouble instead. After getting arrested I got into the trades. I did that for some years before quitting because I wanted to pursue a career in the fire service. It took me a decade to get in, and I got into my dream department in the city I was born and raised in. The scene where he is clapping after getting offered the position full time really hit home after all those years of trial and error (I was in tears after my graduation from the fire academy knowing I’ve made it and all I thought about was my struggles and that scene). I was raised in a tough city, tough neighborhood, and grew up poor. I’m now a father of two, happily married, and a new homeowner. For those out there working hard to get theirs, it’s coming. Don’t ever give up, EVER. I believe in you. I wish everyone the best of luck in your future endeavors.
