Good work Art. I play trumpet in college and love the trumpet/cornet focus of your channel. Excited to see the plating experiments

Hello, Art. Great videos. Have a question about patching with a silver soldering. Could it leave a drops and bugle inside the tubing, where you can't file? And how to avoid it?

From my experience, you can leave drops inside of the tubing it the crack is very wide, and/or too much heat was applied which makes the silver solder super fluid. To me, the best way to avoid it is keeping cracks thin (even if filing a little bit the inside is mandatory, solder won't stick to dirty/oxidized brass) and, as always for solder jobs, managing the heat which requires experience. Fortunately I learned making this kind of jobs by making rolled tubes (to replace mouthpipes of old horns) so I could file the inside of the tube when I messed up (This is my opinion and experience, Art has probably more interresting stuff to say)

What 1090yoyo said is accurate. Because the inside of the tubing has not been cleaned thoroughly, it is unlikely that very much solder will flow into it if the crack is small. If the crack is larger, there are ways of keeping the solder out, but it takes a lot more skill and heat control and it is a little risky. In situations like that, I would usually soft solder a patch onto it.

I truly enjoy watching an artisan with patience work like this. What method do you use to keep the slides from leaking, surly this instrument must have an issue like that?

Surprisingly, the slides are tight enough to not leak with a light coat of slide grease on them.

I’ve wondered. Is it possible to convert a f attachment trombone to a bass trombone. Like an older open wrap single rotor to a 2 rotor.

Yes, it is possible, but it would be very expensive and finding parts would be a little difficult.

You can als9 buy a valveset from edwards or shires and have it fitted on to your bell

I hope you’re being paid about 17 billion dollars for this instrument considering the insane amount of work you’ve been putting in.

Are the capillary effects different from silver solder to soft solder?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 3 жыл бұрын
If you heat it up to 1400 degrees F, the capillary action is similar, usually, the silver solder joints are smaller where capillary action is not as important.

I've never seen cracks like this on a horn...Maybe left in a very cold environment for a period of time like a trunk of a car..

Hi Art, great job. However i'm concerned when I see you using your bare fingers to put hard solder flux... Borax is a highly unhealthy product (carcinogen), its fumes are also toxic shit... I suggest using gloves or tools for spreading it... and I'm currently buidling a fumes aspirator based on a little CMV fan to avoid breathing it, when finished I can tell if it's efficient or not.
