Loved your video. Love the vibes bro. I normally use topcoat, never thought of using cornice cement out of fear it would set too quickly on me while patching up a wall. Good tips and look forward to more videos.

Cheers legend appreciate you watching. Yeah I love the cornice cement. It usually sands pretty easy and the more you use it you will be able to control how fast or slow you want it to set with how much you mix and consistency of the product 👍🤙

@@paintingbyjosh hey mate - I’ve been using the “cornice cement 45” for some ceiling crack repairs and had mixed results. I mix it up thicker for the base coat and try to go thinner with it (more water) for the topcoat and I’m wondering if I should just use a base coat and top coat separately instead of the cornice cement? Have you had much success with ceiling crack repairs using cornice cement and fibreglass mesh? tape?

@@jjonescatch21 hi mate! I have been using the cornice as a base coat & top coat for years now and never really have a problem.

@@paintingbyjosh too easy man yeah I’ve been having a go with it as a base and topping compound (the 45min) and seem to have issues trying to get a consistent mix before it goes hard. When mixing it up I think I’m not gettin a good consistency because I’m nervous about over mixing and causing it to go hard faster but then if it’s not mixed enough it’s clumpy and hard to spread out on the wall. I think I need more experience and keep trialing it out to get it perfect but the mix ratio and method seems hard to master without making it set too fast. I’ve been mixing it up in a mud pan in small amounts as I need (since I do small patches and repairs) then spreading from the pan instead of mixing separately in a bucket - maybe that’s where I’m going wrong since In the mud pan its hard to mix it up good. Thanks for the videos and experience man - appreciate wanting to help out and give tips because I’m a chippy by trade and really trying to get better at plastering/paint touch ups. Would love to work with you for a month! But I’m in Mackay QLD

Hi Josh - can I use paper tape with Corner Cement? Cover thin hairline cracks without putting paper tape? To cover corner beads which are visible under the previous paint job? Thank u so much in advance & your videos are fantastic!

Hey Josh - can you use this stuff for cracked/missing patches plaster on brick wall aswell? i put a coat of boncrete on as well first. I actually bought a bucket of the gyprock multi purpose joint compound at bunnings is the cornice cement is better you reckon? especially for deeper cracks? or same same or different - Thanks Bud!
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh 2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, yes most definitely you can you this for cracks/holes in brickwork & the multi purpose compound is more of a top/skim coat the cornice/base cement is better for larger deeper holes & sets harder & quicker 👍 hope this helps cheers

Actually i more wuestion since im in the middle of it - there was some dodgy crooked rendering done which has beed painted over just a lot of bumps and lines and some dips. Can i go and put some joint compound over it to flatten it out a bit? It seems to bind ok even w paint under it… im gonne put a good base and top over it anyway ofcouse? Is that ok?
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh 2 жыл бұрын
@@jorisvanimhoff9722 yes that would be perfectly fine the filling compound usually have strong adhesion. Just before it sets hard you can shave it down flat with a blade less sanding then sets also 👍

Hi Josh do you sand walls prior to painting an existing wall with a pole sander before you paint? I'm guessing most painters do, and if you do I've heard some guys say that they don't brush the dust off or sugar soap afterwards they just let the dust mix with the paint ...cheers
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, yes I always sand before & between coats. Most importantly is to dust down all surfaces prior to paint otherwise you will just create more work by having to sand more and you are definitely comprising adhesion by not dusting down💯 cheers for the message 👍

handy videos, ive used cornice cement just because i thought it probably has adhesive in it, do you reckon maybe the changes in your sense of smell make chocolate kinda taste a bit like vegemite, i was wondering if you wore a filter mask would your sense of taste improve, diesel ruined my sense of smell took ages for it to come back.

hmm...going to cornice cement to fix cracks after house re-levelling. See how it stacks up against jointing compound. Pre-mixed would be nice. Fibreglass tape for taping.

I need to fill a finger sized gap where two ends of cornice/cove butt up against each other. I also need to apply maybe a thirty centimetre taper where the two sections of cornice meet to hide a glaring half centimetre difference in thickness where old and new cornice meet. The older segment seems thinner despite its equivalent ninety centimetre overall dimensions. I intend to apply a taper to the old segment building it up to meet the new segment. (The concrete ceiling itself is probably wonky as the apartment building presumably settled since construction in 1967.) As I have both plaster of paris and cornice cement on hand I am wondering what might be some pros and cons of mending cracked cornice with plaster of paris alone or adding in some cornice cement? Is cornice cement also known as "mud"? I saw a couple videos advise incorporating a premixed cornice cement (they called "mud") into plaster of paris to extend paris' set-up time. Minus the mud, plaster or paris quickly starts setting only minutes after reaching that ideal spreadable "frosting-like" texture. Quickly turns un-spreadable and irredeemable because I cannot water it down to extend it's "working life". This cornice cement / mud apparently extends the working life of plaster of paris when it is at the point of "frosting" texture" - not unlike the frosting we might thickly spread or butter on a sponge cake. :) I need to go back and find the videos describing the method and see if only the pre-mixed form of "mud" is acceptable. My cornice cement is in the dry powdered form and as it understand it, set-up time is less than a "mud" premix. Hoping to buy more time when applying plaster of paris, I tried watering it down. A total disaster. Adding water seems to create gravel and when it eventually sets and cures, a powdery mess like talc is the result. Has to be removed. Turns the site into a dust bowl.
