On the last day of Classic PATCO Car operation I made sure to capture how exactly these old cars were operated. Our Train Operator was making liberal use of the manual mode because the station stop transponders had pretty much fallen into disrepair with the retirement of the fleet that used them. However he did show off automatic mode on a few occasions.
Just remember that in 1969 this setup was state of the art. It was the first non-experimental use of ATO in North America. However it had many shortcomings that never completely eliminated manual operation, like the inability to run ATO in the rain. The pre-digital logic was basically apply maximum acceleration or maximum braking force until a desired speed was reached. It made for a somewhat less comfortable ride, but man is it efficient!
