I actually like it very much. Maybe too pricey but for Patek customers maybe not. The switch of the straps, this can be an everyday wear for me.
@j.burgess44592 жыл бұрын
I think the watch is an absolute home run. For me it was like deja vu from a couple of years back when they launched the 5212A - almost the very minute I saw it I knew I wanted it and contacted my AD to get my butt on the interest list. Sure, this new one has a very sporty and smart-casual vibe and may appeal to a younger audience. Is is still quintessentially Patek? Well, historically they actually did make some more functional designs aimed at pilots, and certain other professions, didn't they? But even if we see this as something radically new, then it would merely be a case of their changing to reflect modern society. People are much more likely to wear smart casual attire nowadays - including in some professional situations where a suit and tie and polished shoes and a dress watch would previously have been expected. And even in those situations where people are still wearing formal clothes, watch etiquette has continually loosened up over recent decades, hasn't it? People can now even wear a diver's watch on a rubber strap in situations where it would have been and out-and-out fashion faux pas 30 or 40 years ago. So I don't see any problem with the watch in that regard.

The best looking Pateks from this year W&W are for me the salmon dial chrono and perpetual calendar, it's nice to see sth different among all those green and tiffany watches. Those colors are great, don't get me wrong, but especially with green, the list of brand that haven't recently used it is a really short one.

John, you look very stylish in this video! I like that Patek is coming out with two new models and doing something different and stylish at the same time. Unlike Rolex which isn’t as innovative. The dials could use some color, and they remind me of AnOrdain dials. Unfortunately as you suggested, most of us will never get a chance to buy them from an AD.

I get your take in regard to the Tiffany Nautilus being a copycat, but the design elements of these new Calatravas, although much more different than their previous models, are unique and do carry over some of the design elements of their predecessors.
@kenshilcock71982 жыл бұрын
If they maintain their current lines alongside these then why *not* try additional things. The calendar model is gorgeous. I do feel that, on the date model, the window breaks the lines and doesn't fit with the time period that the watch is intended to emulate.

I think the watch is amazing. Maybe not "THE" Patek, but that might be a very good thing. For me, it's an absolutely unobtainable watch, but I could imagine this would be a very nice topping of my collection should I ever be able to afford it. It's a very nice "sleeper" watch, a true luxury piece that doesn't scream that luxury... A very understated, elegant, almost blending in with other field style watches. I like unusual watches that can stand out, but the higher the pricepoint, the more conservative I get, that's something I found out about myself throughout the years of collecting watches. So I really like this piece.

They can do whatever they want and will still as many watches as they feel like making. So, maybe the watch maker's/designers were/are bored AF with more traditional Calatrava and as others have pointed out, since dressing up is far more casual today, why not make a more casual dress line. I don't agree with comparing it to other brands. Yes, there are similar elements, but if you were to see them in person side by side the differences in quality, material, texture, detail is world's apart. In the end, we are talking about a round time price so you have limited boundaries in terms of new design. At least they didn't just turn an old design upside down :).

Maybe it's me but rather than Longines, I see more parallels with Audemars Piguet. In 1972, AP came out with the Royal Oak and PP followed in '76 with the Nautilus. In 2019, AP came out with the Code 11:59 and now PP has come out with these. They're both precious metal round cases, with rather subdued dials with Arabic numerals and I think the design language is very deliberate - in the 70s, AP and PP were trying to stay relevant, and now both brands are trying to move away from the steel sports models that have come to define them. It's a return to the classic styling these manufacturers were known for, albeit with a modern twist.

@dannysimenauer57452 жыл бұрын
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the dial color is very drab. The dial is similar to AnOrdain which pioneered the textured dial. PP could add more color to its dial to make these more appealing.

Very interesting take: I think that is exactly what my issue is with BMW atm: They were always the brand that devised option with looks, only to have other brands copy them a couple of years later. That is no longer the case. Also electric with the i3 & i7 - now other brands have dedicated electric ranges and BMW don’t. When I saw these two watches, I immediately thought I like their looks a lot, but I can definitely see the validity of your argument: Patek & BMW were trend setters, but now have become complacent trend followers which devalues their brands. With Patek though, I don’t know if it is that bad: You used the example of everyone following them with the Genta integrated steel Nautilus: Not entirely true, exactly an example where Patek previously followed the trend of AP with Royal Oak (Everyone, including PP followed AP). Also, the hob-nail sides on the case: That was already used in the steel Grandmaster Chime. The face even looks to me somewhat like their vintage pilot watches. All in all, I am in two: I can see the argument for them devaluing themselves by being trend followers instead of trend-setters, but I don’t see these two as following others as I think these looks like updated versions of vintage PP pilots (Instead of mimicking others)

I can tell a huge difference between the Longine & PP. And there are only 2 other watches that I'm aware of that harbours the same complications as the 5325 (and I'm a sucker for this combo). One's a Rolex and the other's a UN. As much as I like this watch~ I don't entertain the retail games that are being played, particularly with PP. So no matter how much I like this complication combo, I won't be chasing anyone to spend my money. If they come to me... I may consider it. Otherwise the likes of Ferrari, Rolex, Hermes & PP can suck it. There is a huge market of fantastic product out there to consume.
@bighands692 жыл бұрын
There are no retail games. The market has grown and those companies move slow and do not want to be getting into the swings of the marketplace. If things continue at this pace for the next decade they will adjust and start increasing production. There quality is so high so they cannot just at click of a finger just start up a new line. It could cost them $100 million to set up a new line. And they may require 10000 watch sales to make a return out of that.
@treykasia1272 жыл бұрын
@@bighands69 This is not a simple traditional capitalistic "supply / demand" issue. If it were, then the "elite buyer" concept wouldn't exist. Look at the examples of Sam's Wholesale, Cosco, ect... and Rolex makes almost 1MM watches a year on assembly lines.... high quality yes but not special. The "games" to which I refer are much bigger than the luxury watch market and ripples into everyone's interest. Equity firms are funding grey market retailers to spool up demand and increased prices for the purposes of money velocity. I'm afraid that this new layer of "retail" may find its way into markets as fundamental as food. Those are unethical (to traditional capitalism) games in my opinion.

Longines is well known for their military watches back in the days. So saying “they are trying things that they have not being known for” is actually incorrect. The danger is that the new calatrava line could end up dominating the calatrava line to the point that the classic calatrava disappears. It could have been a perfect opportunity for them to release a new sports line of watches that suits casual beauty.
